What to Wear with Short Skirts & Dresses

Linday Lohan - Mini Skirt & BootsYou spent the summer poolside working on that perfect tan (or spent the summer in your bathroom working on that perfect self-tanner).  You were up before the July sun doing lunge-squats at the gym.  You spent mornings running on the beach and afternoons walking around in Fit-Flops.  Your legs are toned, bronzed and waxed.

You are short skirt & mini-dress ready.  There's only one problem - What to put on your feet.

You worked hard to bare those legs, so don't spend a minute stressing - Here's what to wear with that itty bitty mini.

Rachel Bilson - Mini Dress & Sandals

Dressing to grab a cup of coffee during the day can be just as much fun as dressing for a cosmo at night.  The same dress you wear out to the club can serve you equally well during the day with the right shoes and accessories.  A large bag, like Rachel Bilson carries above, keeps you daytime casual.  The look is pulled together with her brown belt and flat casual sandals Flip-flops or other flat sandals are comfy enough to run your errands in and level out your look when you don't want to look too dressed up.  Be sure to keep up your pedicure or you'll just look sloppy.

Give Your Look the Boot

Gossip Girl Tall Soft Boots Cameron Diaz - Mini Skirt & Slouch Boots

While a ruffled mini with soft boots is so my senior year of high school (four years ago - yikes!), soft and slouch boots are definitely making their comeback.  Due mainly to Gossip Girl, tall soft boots have become the obsession of many.  Personally, I prefer a sleek (no pleats, no ruffles) mini with boots that stop or slouch mid-calf (as demonstrated by Cameron Diaz above).

On colder days, wear your mini & boots over tights or leggings.  Play with texture, be it super shiny & smooth or ribbed & chunky.  That's right -  this season, bust out the thick patterned tights like the ones you slipped your footsies into in the first grade.

Heel, Girl

A good heel is probably the #1 choice to wear with a mini skirt or your favorite short dress.  They add length to your bare legs and can make you feel like the quintessential woman - sexy, feminine, and powerful.

If your dress is colorful or has a flashy pattern, stick to a basic heel in a neutral color.  A black patent pump is perfect for a night out in a colorful frock.  With your little black dress, consider a pop of color with a loud heel in your favorite hue. As always, a pointy or peep toe will slim and lengthen the leg.

For something different and trendy, oxford-style, buckled, and other menswear-inspired heels are an edgy take on the peep-toe pump and can easily be taken from the office to happy hour drinks.  Although whether or not you want to be rocking a mini to the office really depends on where you work.

Knee-high boots look adorable with short skirts, and they are perfect in the wintertime to keep your legs warm. Just make sure that if you have short legs, that you wear boots with a slight heel to elongate your look.
