It's the middle of August, so you may feel that the Maxi Dress trend passed you by if you aren't already sporting one of the long frocks. But while kids may be stocking up on school supplies, the sun is still out through September in many places, and with its length, a Maxi could easily be paired with a cardigan and rocked through much of a warm autumn. And what better to put on your feet than the summer shoe trends that can also be stretched past what your calendar calls summer?

Seen this summer worn by many fashionable mamas-to-be, the popular Maxi Dress is famous for being comfortable as well as chic. While perfect for sipping mimosas by the pool, a comfy dress is also perfect for taking notes on the first day of school. While they are typically ideal for tall women, short girls like me can get in on the trend by choosing the best fit for our body types. To avoid dragging on the ground and hidden toes that will only make you look shorter, aim for a skirt that barely brushes your toes (this will also expose your gorgeous shoes). I also like tube or very strappy dresses on short women as opposed to the more flowing and halter tops you will find on most Maxis. A dress that pulls in at the bust or waist will help define the body shape.
Material is also important to keep in mind. With its loose style, a Maxi can flatter most any size - just be sure to select an appropriate size and beware of clingy fabric.

Rachel Bilson avoids being overwhemed by her Maxi Dress with a showcased upper body and strappy sandal.

Much like with my to-the-floor senior prom dress, a Maxi Dress is a good excuse for flat sandals, even flip-flops. I usually find flip-flop fashion to be an oxymoron, but with a long dress, flat sandals can carry you right into fall. I'm a huge fan of a flat t-strap sandal, but if you must wear Old Navy rubber flops, at least keep up your pedicure.
While Maxis may be made for tall girls, that doesn't mean that short girls have to miss out. Along with choosing a properly hemmed garment, you can also do the most obvious cheat and stack on a heel. A wedged sandal or basic wedged heel is a beachy and generally comfortable addition to this laidback look. If you wear a wedge, I recommend wearing a dress that grazes just above your toes. The dress shouldn't drag on the ground, but a heel requires more length than if you paired your Maxi with a flat.
Much like it isn't too late to try the Maxi Dress trend, it isn't too late to go for the gladiator trend. In fact, this may be the perfect time, as I'm near positive they will be clearancing them off at Payless Shoes any moment. With a long dress, you can get away with any style of glad, whether it be a simple t-strap sandal or buckles strapping up your calves. See the tips above on flats or a wedged heel. The gladiator style meshes perfectly with the classic simplicity of a Maxi gown.

Nicole Richie mixes the Maxi and floral print trends, paired with flat strappy sandals.

The Maxi Dress is a comfy trend that, with a few layers and adjustments, can make a comfy transition into the upcoming season. Keep it breezy and laidback with minimal accessories or pair it with a jacket and bold jewelry for a fall-forward look.
Did you own the look of a Maxi Dress this summer, and will you carry it on into fall?

im not sure i really like that look, i prefer shorter dresses they can always be dressed up or dressed down with leggings or even jeans.
I just realized that I own a maxi dress... I guess I didn't know what it was called. I got it from Old Navy in May and it's a halter. It's one of my favorite dresses!
I am so sick of the maxi dress trend. It's everywhere!
