Leaves are falling and even though the weather outside is gorgeous, it's bittersweet knowing that summer is over. Whether you're starting classes this week, or just switching over to a warmer wardrobe, new clothes are one of the best parts (the best part?) of the season change. Skinnies & scarves are great staples, but there's another basic that all women should have in their closets; While you're stocking up on pencils, I also suggest stocking up on a few pencil skirts.A pencil skirt is a flattering piece on any body type and perfect for fall, when a mini skirt is suddenly inappropriate but you still want to show off your tanned gams. Because a pencil is typically longer, the first step is a heel to punch up your calves and lengthen the look of your leg. No matter what style of shoe you choose, I recommend a heel, even if it's only an inch. You will instantly look slimmer and have better posture.
A pencil skirt can be worn to school, the office, the bar, out for coffee, to a party, or on the red carpet. Here we examine three different looks built on a neutral-colored pencil skirt.

When I think of pencil skirts, I think of Victoria Beckham. She is often photographed around town in pencil skirts stopping just past her knee, and a sharp pair of heels. Pumps and accessories in basic black keep the look simply professional, while a colorful shoe can show more of your personality. Keep the pop of color to just one piece - just your shoes, a large flower brooch, or a bag - and the rest neutral to maintain a sleek work appearance.

Boots or gladiator sandals add edge to a basic pencil skirt. Ashley Olsen wears a shiny short pencil skirt (OK, either very hitched up or bordering on mini) with messy hair and funky bags to work the pencil skirt look on a street level. At right, she wears trendy textured tights to run around town.

Paired with a detailed or colorful top, a simple pencil skirt in a neutral such as black can look laidback as well as sophisticated. Strappy shoes keep the look casual and are ideal for warmer weather. America Ferrera uses a strappy heel to draw the eye down her calves and give her basic ensemble a youthful twist. Color creates an empire waistline for a slimming hourglass figure, emphasizing the smallest part of her frame.
A peep-toe pump will also keep a professional outfit looking fresh. Christina Ricci and Kim Kardashian opt for close-toed shoes, but Christina tones down the look with a tank top and sparkly necklace. (Ricci is shown here at an event, but I would wear her outfit out for a coffee date.) Kim picks a gold heel and bangles for an outfit that's more glam than receptionist.
