Necklace Trends for Fall 2008

Chanel Necklaces

For fall, it's time to retire your oversized sunnies & earrings in lieu of a new trend: long necklaces. There are two main styles popular for this season, both available in designer, mall, and even do-it-yourself versions.

Beaded Necklaces

When choosing beads, trade in the chunky jewelry for strands that are long and lean.  You can throw in a few layers, but I am partial to the look of a single strand.  It's up to you whether to pick colorful and funky beads or keep it classic with pearls or other neutrals.

Ashlee Simpson keeps her outfit simple except for her Yves Saint Laurent 'Tribute' shoes and Chanel necklace.  Ashley Olsen tops her own casual look with a strand of beads as she shops for more necklaces.

How to D.I.Y.:
I don't know a woman who doesn't love beading, and here's your chance to bond with Mom or Grandma. While buying a pre-made is probably cheaper, your look will be truly one of a kind if you pick up some beads at the craft store and string your own set.  It won't be Chanel, but when people ask who your jewelry is by, you can proudly boast your own name.

Mixed Chains

Assorted chains mixed into one necklace are a trend that's popping up all over for fall.  The look wraps different chain styles into one dramatic neck piece and is a celebrity and runway favorite.

Mary-Kate Olsen NecklacesForever 21 Necklace

Mary-Kate Olsen combines styles for a chic look.  If you are going to load on the metal, keep your outfit low-key, as MK does with basic black.  Copy her look for a lot less with the Forever 21 chain necklace above for $8.80.

For more ready-to-wear options, WhoWhatWear showcased a variety of necklaces at varying price points, from another F21 necklace for $6.80 to a Maison Martin Margiela piece for $275.  Or you can dig up some of your own jewelry and create your own look...

How to D.I.Y.:
Clutch 22 has a great tutorial on combining three necklaces for a hot style.  Basically, you clasp three necklaces together to acheive a layered look, but with all pieces attached.  As shown in her tutorial, you can use any types of chains, including bracelets or belts as well as old necklaces.  I recommend hitting up Goodwill or garage sales for chains if you don't have any old jewelry lying around, as cheap mall jewelry tends to oxidize & turn green on you.
