Knocked Up Is The New Fierce

I'm not preggers so maybe I shouldn't care, but Christian Siriano of Project Runway-winning fame has announced he's going to launch a maternity collection.

Please note the absence of any FIERCE jokes here.  Because this time, CS is actually calling the new collection Fierce himself.  Literally.

Straight from the mouths at NYMag, Siriano teamed up with the founders of Moody Mamas maternity clothes to create a collection called Fierce for Moody Mamas by Christian Siriano. That's right, Fierce.  As the NYMag moles quip, "Really? Fierce? It already has originality written all over it!"  Listen quietly enough, and you can hear the failed trademark of Paris Hilton defiantly shout, "That's hot!"

The full line goes up for sale on MoodyMamas.com in the spring of 2009, at which time I still don't anticipate being pregs.  So why do I care?  There is only one reason I'd pay attention to this line, and that's because I frankly think Siriano can't design for what I'll call Real Life, or what's known as the realm of the non-models (aka, paying customers).

I freely admit I was blown away by his PR stint.  But those were 96-pound 14-year old models he was designing for.  Remember what his first Real Life stint was?  Whoopie Goldberg.  While this dress isn't awful, it doesn't scream, "WINNER OF PROJECT RUNWAY" either.  In fact, it looks a lot like the Joann's Fabric Prom Dress Pattern #76 I thought I'd whip up for myself.  Or like a houserobe with an aggressive set of ruffles.

Christian Siriano deisgning for curves?  You bet I'll be waiting to check out that.

#1. Whoa! Whoopi has great gams!! #2. Siriano was fun to watch on Project Runway but I don't see his clothes translating for Target or QVC (where I see Chloe Dao all the time) anytime soon. I'm sure his maternity clothes would be for the Paris Hilton-esque pregnant women.

I think a better challenge than designing for a runway is designing for life!

I was just explaining to someone that the fashion industry is completely beginning to recognize women with curves these days. I wish they would do it a little louder, so I could stop explaining to midwestern girls that no one really expects you to be stick thin, stick thin girls just happen to be best at showcasing the designer. Further more, Stacy and Clinton need to be a little louder too, so those same girls know that its about dressing for your body type and size, not dressing in what you see the other girls wearing. Gosh... I ramble.
