1. Buttons & Ribbons. One of the easiest ways to quickly change the look of any item is to add new details. Buttons can be found at craft shops, thrift stores, and garage sales all over the place. All you need is a needle and thread and you can easily replace the old and plain buttons on your item with new fun ones. I love the look of plain cardigans with big, funky, vintage buttons. It adds something new to the piece while also making it into something one-of-a-kind. Ribbons are a bit trickier to add to items, but can be a great accent. Take cues from recent store finds and sew bows around the neckline of a shirt, sweater, or cardigan. Or use a wide ribbon in a vibrant color or pattern as a belt.
2. Re-Create Items. If the material and/or pattern of an item is really great, but the fit or cut isn't worth keeping around, re-create it into something new! Those jeans that you accidentally splattered with bleach could be turned into a great pair of destroyed denim shorts. Pretty much any t-shirt can be made into a halter top. I once turned this horrible black & white stripe turtleneck top into a really cute halter top. If you only love the print or color of the material, make it into an accessory. It's easy to sew a zipper in and create a new makeup bag for your purse. It's also just as easy to turn it into a drawstring bag or a tote bag if you have enough material to work with. For lots and lots of great ideas check out the Craftster Reconstructed Clothing message board. For these projects, especially as a beginner, make sure to use only items that you won't be bummed about if it doesn't work out.
3. Mix & Match. Try new cominations! You'd be amazed at how fresh things can look when paired with something out of the ordinary. A cute menswear outfit still looks chic when paired with Converse Chuck Taylors, and who says that you can't wear heels with jeans and a basic white t-shirt? Learning to make new combinations not only helps you be more creative, but it also gives you a lot more options in your wardrobe. No one creates fashion by following the trends and sticking to what's safe. Push the boundaries and wear what you think looks good together.
4. Swap & Trade. Get together with your friends and all bring items that you are willing to part with. Or swap items online through Sparkle Swap! Odds are that you'll all find something in someone else's stash that you'd love to try wearing. Remember, new-to-you items are often times just as great as brand new items.
Using these tips, you can end up with a wardrobe that is fresh and new without spending a lot of money. Your closet will be full of great new items and your wallet will be thanking you.

You're welcome! :-) I'm not much of a great sewer myself, so I tried to stick with tips that I could handle. There's definitely a lot more options out there for those experienced with sewing!
I love this article! I'm okay at sewing, not great. I don't have a sewing machine or know how to use one. But I can definitely sew new buttons on sweaters. I am going to take your advice and find cool old buttons and sew them onto some of my older sweaters. Thanks!
