Perfectly distressed skinny jeans are more awesome when you do them yourself. You can scrub jeans with rock salt (with or without a touch of bleach, wearing gloves of course) to soften, and carefully use scissors to slit jeans where you want tears. Mark jeans with a white eyeliner pencil for reference while wearing them if you want rips in specific places. Make the scissor cuts about an inch wide and carefully rip the rest of the way by hand for a more authentic look. Use a cheese grater on the denim to complete the distressed look.

I'm thinking the only reason this trend even caught on is because you can do it with jeans you already have. Katie Holmes made this look famous with very straight-legged sort of 'Mom jeans,' but you can do it with any pants that fit you loosely, be they your actual boyfriend's denim or just your own 'fat jeans.' Belt at the waist if necessary, and roll up the bottoms to your taste. (If you absolutely have no jeans in your household you can use for this, you can thrift a pair of straight-legged Gap or Old Navy denim for under $10 at most Goodwill type outlets.)
Keep in mind The Boyfriend Jean Rules.
For the oversized vest trend, you will need a large t-shirt or sweater. (If it's a sweater, it must be something you can cut without it unraveling all over the place - you don't want it to fall apart.) Start by cutting the front into a v-neck if it isn't already. Next, cut straight down the front, and chop off the sleeves. Depending on the look you want, you could stop there, or you can carefully hem (or bribe someone you know who sews into hemming for you) the cut edges. I recommend practicing this on a throwaway shirt before you hack into the piece you really want to use. Feel free to adorn with buttons, even if they're just decorative. Personalize the look with jewels, feather or flowers, studs and gromets.
Mix Your Own Trendy PolishA major nail shade for Spring '09 is coral, and InStyle magazine suggests you mix your own by adding a few drops of yellow polish to a bottle of red. Standing over a sink, pour the yellow into the bottle of red polish, cap and shake. Start with a few drops, mix, and add more yellow as desired until you have the perfect nail color. Coral is flattering on most skin tones.
Black and white polishes are classic, but Spring is about monochromatic nails with a metallic shine. Use the technique above to add gold, silver, or clear glittery polish into your matte black, white or gray for a new light-grabbing look.
