1. Soften a structured look with lingerie-inspired elements. Try pairing pastel colored satin shorts, a feminine tank top, a blazer, and studded white peep-toe heels. The point is to combine enough masculine structured pieces and feminine soft pieces to balance each other out. The end result isn't quite menswear, but isn't too girly either. Examples of a tomboy-ish version of this look can be seen in the spring 2009 Marc by Marc Jacobs collection.

2. Build an outfit around a unique article of clothing. Try a skirt with a bold texture or pattern and a plain tank top. Or a brightly colored jacket over an otherwise neutral outfit. By using one piece to draw attention to your look, it enables you to skip fussing over the rest of your outfit and keep it simple. This was done by Agyness Deyn at the Stephen Sprouse Tribute Party hosted by Louis Vuitton.

3. Flaunt one stretch of skin at a time. Try short destroyed denim shorts with an over-sized crochet blouse, basic tank, and a large boho style bag. Or pair a camisole-like tank top with wide leg trousers and platforms. This look proves the old saying that less really is more. You could also take a page from Chanel Iman at the Stephen Sprouse Tribute Party hosted by Louis Vuitton and pair a sexy "naked" dress with a leather blazer.

4. Mix ladylike pieces with something super sexy. Try a ruffled blouse and tweed blazer with leather leggings and oxford heels. Just like in the first look, combining styles creates a look that isn't menswear or too girly. A look similar to this was worn by Maryna Linchuk at the Stephen Sprouse Tribute Party hosted by Louis Vuitton, who wore an everyday version of this rule.

5. Make gray your go-to neutral. Pair a vibrant top with gray skinny jeans and basic pumps. Or pick gray accessories instead of the typical shades of white, black, and brown. Gray goes with just as many items and is a color that actually looks better as it fades. One celebrity who loves gray is Hilary Duff, who wore gray leggings, a simple cardigan, tall boots, and carried a gray handbag.

6. Refuse to accessorize a dress that speaks for itself. A neutral colored dress with subtle details that fits well doesn't need any other accessories. Enough said. The perfect example of this rule was worn by AnnaLynne McCord at the People's Choice Awards.

7. Add edge to a classic look. Take a classic look from the 1960s and update it with current trends. Pair wide-leg khaki trousers and a striped top with retro white platforms. You want to end up looking like an updated and fresh Jackie Onassis. A great example of this look is the vintage glam style of Dita Von Teese.

8. Don't match your shoes and belt... but keep them in the same color family. Try a basic outfit in simple colors with a bold belt and shoes in different shades of purple or bright pink. Or, if you want to go for an understated version like Ashley Tisdale, try accessories in different shades of a neutral color. Notice how her handbag is a much richer shade than her fringe boots? By not matching them perfectly, it adds a bit of sexy messiness and edginess to your outfit.

Great article! Thanks for all of the specific examples. I especially like #2. I have a bright green and blue mini skirt with butterflies printed all over it. I like to wear it with with black tights, black boots, and a black turtleneck. As suggested ion #6, I let the skirt speak for itself.
