Nowadays, we're writing for great fashion sites (Sparkle*Shelf and Independent Fashion Bloggers, to name a couple) as well as posting on our own domains. Not every fashionista wants to commit to purchasing web space, but that doesn't mean you can't share your looks of the day and thoughts on trends in style. With various social networking and blog-hosting sites targeted at stylistas across the nation (and around the globe), everyone can find a place to post their form of fashion glory....

StyleMob

Although they clearly love the hipster look more than any other style, StyleMob is like the Hot or Not for fashion. Form a Style Council with friends and easily notify them of your fashion emergencies, or just browse the general Advice section and Forums. StyleMob also holds fun contests (currently Most "Deliciously Ugly Christmas Sweater") and monthly raffles (based on StylePoints) with real life prizes.

Lookbook.nu

Lookbook.nu is invite-only and allows users to post full-body LOTDs (Look of the Days). It's cool because you can organize by gender, location, and even brands, as well as view the page based on freshness or most popular "hyped" looks. Downsides include trying to get an invite, being forced to post a full-body photo (as opposed to just showing off one piece of your outfit), and a slightly intimidating vibe. I like my style is a similar site that does not require an invite but has the same minimalist feel and straightfoward outfit posting.

OnSugar

OnSugar is an easy girl-friendly blog service. Easily set up an account (if you're a member at Team Sugar you already have one!) and post to cute and customizable templates which allow for comments by other members. You get your own OnSugar URL (http://you.onsugar.com) and access to stock images for use on your mini-site. You can even pimp out clothes and accessories to make a bit of commission with ShopStyle. Of course, you can definitely just use the platform to blog about yourself or anything else you want, but fashion/beauty sites are the norm there.

Polyvore

Polyvore is a fun resource for aspiring stylistas. With their drag and drop tools you can piece together spreads of clothing and accessories, room decor, or just a collage of inspiration. Your designs are shared on your Polyvore profile, with the additional option of pasting the look into your blog. My favorite feature is a toolbar icon that lets you save images from all over the web into your saved Polyvore items.

How to Successfully Thrift Shop

Looking to add a punch to your holiday outfit on a budget? Bored on a Saturday with just twenty bucks in your pocket? Thrift shopping may be the perfect solution. A cheap fix for the itch to shop and a cure for boredom, thrifting is not just for the less fortunate. With trends repeating every few years and even celebs shopping vintage clothing, a few thrifty tips might even help make you more fashion fortunate.

Thrifting Versus Vintage

While I support all forms of shopping secondhand (it's environmentally and economically responsible, y'all), I prefer thrift stores to vintage stores. The difference between the two is that while a thrift store is generally based on donated clothing with few guidelines as to what goes on the shelves, vintage stores consist of hand-picked secondhand items. The same as stores that accept trade-in clothing and accessories (stores like Buffalo Exchange and Plato's Closet), the quality of the items throughout the store in vintage shops will be better. As a result, prices are considerably higher. With a thrift store, you are on your own to dig through the racks and bins of donations. As a result of this, the prices are lower. I prefer thrifting to shopping vintage stores as it is much more affordable and also a challenge.

Location

Although location isn't as crucial to thrift shopping as some will tell you, it can play a part. I recommend finding the place near you where other people are least likely to thrift shop. Affluent neighborhoods where people don't "need" to buy secondhand, for instance. The more money people in the area have, the nicer the donated items will be, in theory. Trendier "hipster" neighborhoods will likely have stores that are picked over; you'll have competition. Independently owned secondhand stores may offer unpicked treasures, but may also have higher prices than chain thrift stores such as Goodwill and Value Village.

Have a Plan

It's helpful to have a plan when you step into a thrift store or flea market. Do you need a quality, affordable jacket? Cowboy boots? Are you on a mission for scarves, or perhaps sunglasses? I personally am always on the hunt for jewelry, scarves, shoes, and jackets. I scope the entire store, but generally have better luck searching for complementary pieces than basics. Especially if you don't like the idea of wearing someone else's clothes (there are a lot of you, I'm sure, who are averse to thrifting for this reason), thrifted accessories will add a vintage or unique style to your non-thrifted wardrobe. Of course, you absolutely can find awesome secondhand jeans, and last month I brought home a black lace top perfectly on-point with this season's trends.

From my experience, the best place for a newbie thrifter to start is looking at shoes, scarves, belts, and jewelry. These pieces require less imagination to make work, and are a good morale boost. Having no luck when you're determined not to go home empty-handed is frustrating. Finding something that you love right off the bat can make the trip worthwhile and loosen you up for the rest of your shopping experience.

I wouldn't say there is a worst place to look (except maybe undies and pajamas - those should be avoided in 99% of all thrifting circumstances), as it really depends on what you're looking for. Old t-shirts and jeans are perfect if you're planing to do alterations, and fancy dresses are great for the fabric and for costumes. For day-to-day wear, however, I recommend spending most of your efforts in the following departments:

Shoes
Outerwear
Accessories - belts, scarves
Jewelry

Really though, it's all about knowing your style. I've tried and failed with sixties dresses, but if you know you can pull off the look, secondhand stores have great stuff. An old flowy dress could look amazing with a belt cinching the waist and your favorite designer boots. One of the great things about thrifting is that with very affordable pricing, you can take risks.

Some Buying Tips:

Try things on. Just like anywhere else, you never really know how something will look on you until it's on you.

Pay attention to the material. If the fabric is good, the chances of it being a great cut are good. Something made with cheap fabric is likely to be cheap all-around.

Be realistic - and excited. Be honest with yourself about what you can (and more importantly will) fix or alter. When I first started thrifting I ended up with a lot of clothes stuffed in the back of my closet because I saw potential but lacked follow-through. When shopping for anything, I ask myself, "Do I want to wear this tomorrow?" Visualize the entire outfit in your head. Clothes worth buying are ones that get you excited.

Keep in mind that you can have items professionally tailored if sewing ain't your thing.

Go with your gut. If you are instantly in love with something, get it, especially if it's easily within your budget. You can always re-donate it. I passed up a faux fur vest last spring, and I'm obviously now kicking myself.

Work thrift pieces into your usual wardrobe. Avoid looking sloppy or dated by pairing new and old pieces - your brand new jeans with a worn-in thrifted tee, or a thrifted dress with shiny new accessories.

Really, the best way to learn how to thrift shop is to do it. If it grosses you out, you can wear rubber gloves - really - and shower once you get home. I will admit, after a day of hopping between secondhand stores, I often feel a bit grody. Give your items a quick hand washing (some things will be washing machine safe, but I do a first wash by hand so that I can wear my new things ASAP!) and let them dry out while you hop in the shower.

I can't guarantee that you'll stumble upon a vintage Chanel purse for ten bucks - that probably isn't going to happen - but the more you thrift shop, the better your odds of scoring amazing deals.

One celebrity whose style I love is Ashley Tisdale. She always looks pulled together, trendy and chic no matter what she's wearing. Now, I know that I'm not the only person living in an area that's still pretty warm out right now. For those of us who can't wait to get into fall clothing but find it's still a bit too warm, this casual and cute outfit is perfect.

Sleep in late for class? Want to run errands on your Saturday off but don't want to take the time to dress up or leave the house in sweats? Then take Ashley's lead and wear a super cute plaid blouse, mini skirt, and boot combination. I don't know about you, but I'm thinking that her hairstyle is also probably a quick cover up for hair that needs to be washed and her signature aviators will probably be around until after her morning coffee run. Just like us, Ashley Tisdale doesn't wake up looking glam and she has her lazy days too.

She probably spent a fortune to get her look, but after some browsing I found that it's quite easy to score similar items with a much smaller price tag. Try the Trixie 3Q Plaid Shirt paired with the Frayed Denim Mini, both from Forever 21. For the shoes, I went with a larger price tag and suggest trying the Minnetonka Shell Fringe Bootie from Urban Outfitters. At $58.00 they can't be called cheap, but the quality of these booties is going to make them worth every penny.

Accessorize with Aviator Sunglasses from Forever 21 that are similar to the pair Tisale is wearing, and the Savvy Silver Bracelets from Forever 21. Always staying in style, Ashley Tisdale picked up one of the large slouchy hobo bags that are trendy this fall. Check out the Mossimo Large Hobo from Target if you want to get a nice looking and relatively decent quality bag for an affordable price.

Spring is Gonna Rock

I do not want to get into spring fashion. To tell you the truth, I don't see how those fashionistas can hit all of the Fashion Week runways and then go back to those fall clothes. Perhaps I'm just impatient - I see a hot item, I want it NOW, and because I'm typically not buying the designer pieces themselves, I'm able to shake up my own version the moment inspiration hits. Still, pumped as I am for a season of goth style and dressing all in black, I have been seeing so many amazing pieces for Spring '09 that I couldn't not share my spring inspiration mashup.

My fave trend for spring is simple pieces in light, crisp colors, particularly high-waisted pencil skirts. These are appropriate for fall as well, but spring's watercolor palette makes them especially girly, sexy & refreshing. It's still fairly sunny where I live, and if your climate is similar, merge the fall and spring styles by wearing a high-waisted skirt in black, a lightweight white tank, and a light cardigan. Perfection.

I am certainly not a fan of LC, and think she might in fact be the most vapidly overrated person alive. Still, when I read Jennifer Stoddart's post on Lauren Conrad's Spring Collection, I had to admit I actually like the stuff. Simple and sexy is what my daily style aims for, and the reality-star-turned-designer has put together a series of looks that are minimalistic yet girly. Below, a rosy tank worn with a flowy high-waisted mini. As Jenn described it, "Overgrown 'Carrie Bradshaw flowers' adorned headbands" complete the show's feminine theme.

OK, so maybe I'm just a sucker for high-waisted minis? The spring collection by Deulass includes this gorgeous skirt, paired with my #1 clothing staple, the basic black tank. Simple gold jewelry adds polish and is icing on the cake.

The girls behind Deulass have only been in business since last year, and as the Pipeline on Refinery said, "We're impressed that they've made these ultra girly colors and designs look hip, mature, and (dare we say it?) sexy." I agree. The watercolor bubble mini reminds me simultaneously of something I would have worn as a kid and something I still feel too juvenile to pull off. In the best way.

Right On Target

Has anyone else noticed that Target has finally hit the mark this season? Sure the store has been trying to bring designer to the ‘cheap’ side, but so far it has been a few hits and a lot of misses. But now... well things have changed.

I walked in to my local Target today and had to keep my mind focused on the reason for my visit - hair products! The clothing section was calling my name. Every time I turned around there was another super-trendy, great-priced item I wanted to add to my wardrobe. I proceeded with caution purchasing only what I needed - this time. But I can’t wait to have the opportunity to go back and try things on.

Beanies: Not Just for Boyfriends

As a girl with a thing for skateboarders, I discovered early that wearing your boyfriend's beanie is a cute way to show your love, and one that's much more fashionable than actually wearing his men's large sweatshirt in public. If you're single, or if your boyfriend doesn't wear beanies, don't fret - I have some knit picks perfect for our winter wardrobe. After the jump: My faves and where to buy them, and a D.I.Y. anyone can pull off.

Celeb Inspiration

Rachel Bilson is the queen of casual chic. I only wish my casual included a Chanel purse! Here she is in simple black and white with gold accents. Hair tucked up in a warm beanie is a great way to transition into cooler weather.

A slouchy beanie is a fantastic way to keep it classic chic or add a funky hipness to an outfit, depending on how you wear it.

Rachel Bilson looks city pretty, mix-matching delicate feminine pieces with her black jacket. The white hat balances the black by bringing softness to her face, and adds a twist of Parisian sophistication.

Scarlett Johannson (shown here campaigning for Obama - ignore that dude to her right) wears trendy dark tights with black boots and tops a comfy grey dress with a laidback beanie.

My favorite celebrity couple (they remind me of my boyfriend and I the way they share clothes) Pete Wentz and Ashlee Simpson show beanies at perhaps their laidback best -- something to keep you snuggled up and warm.

Mary-Kate and Ashlee (had to!) are both fans of this red slouch beanie. I love how it makes both of their eyes pop.

My fave of the thick knittted styles include the Urban Outfitters beanie above left. The one at right (also from UO) is more like a headband, but a great way to wear a huge trendy flower.

If you're more glam than skate girl, something like this sequined beanie from ASOS might be for you. For more classic styles or classic styles with a twist like the beret above, also try Forever 21 or TopShop.

D.I.Y.

If you're super crafty you can probably knit yourself your own beanie. I can't knit and could maybe remember how to crochet a square, so my D.I.Y. consists of modifying something cheap into something unique & priceless:

My fave celeb-worn beanie is the one above sported by Mischa Barton. She looks both warm and edgy with the black complementing her light hair and eyes. (Black works on everyone, but play around with shades and styles of hats until you find what looks good with your face.) I'm sure her beanie isn't a do-it-yourself job, but this isn't a hard look to imitate. Stores like Walmart, Walgreens, or even gas stations sometimes carry basic stocking cap beanies. Purchase a beanie and scrounge up a handful of fun buttons (thrift shop, yard sale, craft store, your grandma's sewing box). Using yarn or thick thread matching the beanie, stitch buttons onto the front of your beanie in a haphazard pattern to your liking. You'll be answering teenyboppers' "Oh my God, where'd you get your beanie?" in no time.

How-to: Plaid & Flannel Button-ups

I first picked up on the flannel shirt trend back in May when I noticed Lindsay Lohan sporting the look. I didn't get the chance to show off the flannels I bought through the hot summer, so I'm happy that this trend is hanging on for fall 2008. Celebrities like Mary-Kate Olsen have been seen playing with this look in all sorts of ways, and it's one you can adapt for yourself too.

Miley Cyrus keeps it comfy in an untucked flannel, cuffed shorts and gladiator flats. If you're hesitant to wear the large shirt in the typical 'grunge' shades, take a cue from Lauren Conrad -- She picks a fresher hue and shows some skin to keep it girly. Having the shirt tucked in emphasizes her waist.

I don't care for the jacket, but I love the way Lindsay Lohan works the flannel shirt with the boots. A fashionable boot really separates the flannel top from its lumberjack roots. Mary-Kate Olsen does a boot as well, working the oversized shirt over a pair of dark tights. The slightly grunge look meshes well with the goth-inspired fashions forecasted for fall. Work the ensemble with a large 'it' bag, or pick up one of the oversized clutches that are popping up this season.

Tips for making Plaid & Flannel Shirts Work for You:

Makeup that face. Try out dramatic eyes or a bold lip like MK above. If you choose to go natural, at the very least layer on some mascara or wear your lips super glossy to offset the grunginess of the shirt.
Emphasize your legs. Shorts, a mini, or leggings are an excellent way to show off your shape. If you wear jeans, go with your skinniest skinnies. Too much bulk on your legs will make your whole body appear sloppy. Consider how your silhouette will look.
Try a belt. A row of studs slung around the shirt at your hips will give you more shape and a unique edge.
Roll up your sleeves. Show off your wrists and forearms, which you can stack with dainty bracelets or clunky bangles.
Work it as a frock. A super long shirt will make a great dress for nights out -- just be sure to wear leggings or full-coverage booty shorts underneath.
When in doubt, wear heels. Lindsay Lohan has been seen out in an oversized flannel button-up, mini skirt and pumps looking fierce.
Accessorize! This is the perfect time to play with fall necklace trends or layer on funky sunnies for the rest of the sunny season.

Full Minis for Fall 2008

I'm really loving this throwback to vintage styles lately. Last season it was floral prints (still great, especially in pretty scarves), and my new favorite trend is Full Miniskirts. More fashion than clubbing (although you could certainly wear this look out to the bar), a full mini is perfect to add padding to a small behind or just a trendy twist to your style. As noted by Fab Sugar, minis can be worn with bare legs, with leggings (please, don't), or with dark tights (please, do) for fall.

The full mini-skirt is a Fall Must-Have and works seamlessly with other current trends, particularly dark and textured tights and Fall Peep Toe Pumps. Minis are available from micros to longer styles that reach down to the knee, so pick the skirt you are comfortable in.

Animal print mini from Forever 21

I would love the skirt above with a pair of brightly colored tights and black ankle boots. Top with a slim cardigan for chilly September mornings.

A more pleated skirt is OK, but look for soft fabric with loose folds as opposed to sharp creases. Plaid is trendy as well, so it's the perfect time to live out any schoolgirl fantasies.

From Urban Outfitters, I love the Kimchi Skirt on the right because it's named for my favorite food. When wearing a print on your skirt, stick to bare legs or a dark tight in a solid shade. I'm of course partial to heels, but comfy flats over warm tights are perfect for running from class to class.

Trend Alert! Yigal Azrouel Updates Your Wardrobe

What's so special about the Yigal Azrouel Women's Spring 2009 collection? The answer is very simple... it's exactly like your wardrobe, only it's so much better. I won't drown you in fashion metaphors, but I will say this, the line is snuggle-worthy. And in my book, that's huge!

This is the kind of clothing that instantly updates your wardrobe with just a few key pieces. And the best part is that these ridiculously lush-plush garments have that fabulous lived-in look. But, they still drape perfectly and are utterly chic.

All of these tonal colors and laid-back designs have me longing for the onset of spring, not old man winter. My thoughts? Bring on the flounces with Yigal Azrouel, because this collection has serious style.

Faux Fur Fabulosity

Although caveman were the first to sport furry frocks in cold weather, thousands of years later, the look is less for protection and more for the desire to be desired. Now, there is no animal sacrifice needed to look fabulous in wintertime furs.

A Little History

Beginning in the 1920s a new kind of jacket stole the winter outerwear scene with to-the-floor, wrist-length-sleeved, heavy fox, ferret or even skunk fur that was meant to help the fashionable survive the elements in style. This unfortunately pricey look took over the scene and although the style of jackets didn’t change much, continued to be a fad until the late 1980s.

Oh the 1980s

When I was a wee one, the world became much more health-conscious and earth-friendly. This was seen in jam-packed, step aerobics classes and fast food sushi chains. People not only focused on improving themselves, but the world they lived in. People began to frown upon designers that used fur (never really frowning upon leather goods) and screamed out against its uncivil practices. With this came the ever-improving synthetic furs, or faux furs, that have replaced many of the previous costly furs.

Fledgling Faux Fur Enthusiasts

Let’s break it down, for the pricewise. Any fashionista knows that the absolute best place to find one-of-a-kind (unfortunately, often real animal) fur coats is at a vintage store. You will save yourself a wad of cash and have outstanding bragging rights among friends. But, for those who are disturbed by the thought of wearing animal fur or plainly scared of getting red paint thrown on them by PETA demonstrators, I give you some great jumping points for faux fur fabulosity.

Downtown! Where all the lights are bright!

Let’s mosey on over to the Upper West Side where things are done in style, and the beloved Saks Fifth Avenue. This month take a look at the Juicy Couture luxurious faux fur, empire waist jacket. Juicy keeps it classy with gorgeous gold buttons and frilly ribbon detailing. I am not a fan of JC items typically, but I would absolutely love to wrap myself up in this sweetheart for $328 at saksfifthavenue.com.

DG Always Does Me Good

Dolce and Gabbana hop on the vegan-wear train by making this scrumptious, golden caramel colored shrug in a very soft and delicate faux fur fabric. Neiman Marcus reports that it is a mustard color, but I think it achieves so much more than that. This cropped number will set you back quite a bit, but I think it is a piece that will outlast trends, crossover trends, and be radiant into your ripe old age. The Softer Side of Diesel

Diesel’s ideas of ‘industrial chic’ have calmed down throughout the years, and recently taken a turn for the dainty. Get this sophisticated, faux fur collared brown canvas ‘Blawen’ jacket at bluefly.com. As Project Runway’s main sponsor, it doesn’t even matter that this is a discount venue. BlueFly delivers the hottest fashions of yesterday and today and unbeatable prices.

In Like a Lion With L.A.M.B.

This L.A.M.B. 'Bee' Hooded Jacket with faux fur trim gives a new twist on the plaids we see coming out this season. With a stylized twist, Stefani lends a bit of punk to a classic east coast look. The hood has a feature which I really love on fur-lined jackets. The hood unzips in the center of the back, creating a faux fur collar. It’s a little bit short, but funky, sweet, and definitely a bit steep at a whopping $285. I love it so much that I may just go ahead and buy it at Nordstrom.com.

And So it Is

Now I know that these are some expensive and slightly impossible options. Oh wouldn’t it be grand to have a grand to spend on a winter’s coat. It would be splendid. But don’t fret, ladies! We know that stores like Forever21 and H&M are hot on the tails of the latest fashions and will be so graciously mimicking our favorite pieces in no time. So read up on what you love now, so that you have an eye for it in the future. Also, my friends and I make wish lists of clothing and shoes that we would love to have, but could absolutely never afford (i.e., everything by Chloe, Marc Jacobs, and Dolce and Gabbana) so that we remember what all of our hard work is going towards—one day being able to afford all of it!

The Buzz on Electricals -- What Your Styling Appliances Are Doing for You

It’s 6:15 in the morning, and you’re just now hopping in the shower. You have to be out the door in 15 minutes, and you’re really regretting hitting the snooze button those last three times. Thankfully, you have your trusty blow dryer to rely on, so at least your hair will look fabulous, even if the rest of you doesn’t.

You jump out of the shower, get dressed, and pick up your dryer, ready for 1875 watts of super styling power to come blasting at you.

You flip the switch.

Nothing.

You flip it again.

Still nothing.

You pop the reset button, flip the switch a few more times, maybe even bang it on the counter, but the end result is the same.

You need a new blow dryer.

It sounds like such a simple task – walking into your local salon, big box store or beauty supplier and buying a blow dryer. Yet, when you do arrive, fully confident this will be a quick, easy task, your mind is overwhelmed with all the choices laid out in front of you. As if the plethora of shiny new styling appliances all lined up in their colorful packaging isn’t enough to send your brain into meltdown mode, all these big words like “ionic” and “ceramic” start popping up before your eyes. What the heck is an ion? What do you do with it? Sounds more like something out of a science fiction movie than something you’d want to put on your hair.

The truth is, there are a lot of choices when it comes to hairstyling appliances and it’s only complicated by all the new technology on the market. So, what is all this techno-babble and what can it possibly do for you?

The big advancement in the last few years is definitely ionic technology. You’ve probably heard about it on television, online or in a magazine. Ceramic styling appliances paved the way for ionic technology, but it doesn’t end there. Materials like titanium (a super light-weight, yet super strong metal) and tourmaline (a gemstone from Sri Lanka) also produce negative ions when exposed to heat, and more often than not, in even greater quantities than ceramic.

Negative ions neutralize positive ions in your hair, providing a whole host of benefits as they do so.

Besides reducing your drying time by up to 30% when using an appliance like a blow dryer by breaking down the molecules of water at a faster rate, ions also help to close the hair’s cuticle. The cuticle is the outer layer of the hair, which protects the inner structure of the hair in layers, like shingles on a roof. When the cuticle is closed, the overlapping cells (or the shingles, if you will) all lay down flat, so hair is soft, smooth and shiny. Also, by having all those cells laying down flat, you’re protecting the cortex (the inner structure), which means you can use more heat with less damage, and you’re locking in more moisture – so that five or ten minutes you left your conditioner on while you were in the shower, isn’t ten minutes of your life you’ll never get back.

Another term you may see on all that fancy packaging is Far Infrared Heat.

Far infrared heat penetrates the cuticle to dry or style the hair from the inside out, so you spend less time exposing the cuticle to damaging heat which can make all those little cells stand up on end. When the cuticle is raised, not only are you losing moisture and exposing the cortex to damage from heat and the environment, but hair is generally frizzy, dull and can feel like straw. Far infrared will help to lock in your style at the very core level, cutting down on styling time and making hair more resistant against styling saboteurs like humidity, hats and hair elastics.

Nanotechnology is one more daunting term being plastered all over styling appliances.

Most people think of nanotechnology as being tiny little robots, which is only partially true. Nanotechnology actually breaks down molecules into itty, bitty particles which is really good news for negative ions. By making those ions even smaller, you can get even more of them working to condition and protect your hair. Nanotechnology results in a more stable and higher functioning particle, more far infrared heat production, and can be applied to any material. Think of ions like a football team and nanotechnology is the cheerleading squad; providing support and encouragement, inspiring the team to work harder, faster and more efficiently.

You may also see nano silver, which is antibacterial (more suited for salons who use the same appliances on several heads of hair in the course of a day), nano gold (which conducts heat more efficiently so you’re less likely to burn your hair--perfect for hair that’s hard to style) and even nano zirconia (which puts out lots of those negative ions, similar to tourmaline).

Rheostat is definitely a word you want to look for on flat irons and curling irons.

A rheostat allows you to control the temperature on your appliance. This way, you get enough heat to get the job done but not so much heat that you’re doing unnecessary damage. Thin, fine hair generally needs less heat to take, and hold, a style, while thick, coarse hair will usually need a higher temperature to get the job done.

It may seem like an awful lot of science to absorb and an awful lot of big words to try and remember. However, the next time you find yourself staring down a long aisle of styling appliances, a little bit of knowledge can go a long way towards narrowing down what may feel like a million choices. If that’s not enough, your knowledge will definitely be rewarded every day you use your appliance and see your smooth, shiny strands or crisp, bouncy curls in the mirror. This is one science experiment you can really be buzzed about!

Rumer Willis is all business these days with her role in the exciting new comedy, House Bunny. This starlette, freshly 20 and fresh to the scene, shows us that she might just be here to stay.

Yes, it’s true: as Demi and Ashton let the hot Hollywood sun set on their careers, pure bred famester Rumer Willis comes out of left field with a budding career. Well, let’s be real--her acting career didn’t just appear out of thin air. She made a cameo in such '90s favorites as Striptease and Now and Then. So, after a five year or so hiatus, Willis is ready and willing to show us all what she’s made of. Such blogging babes as Perezhilton.com and the luscious ladies of GoFugYourself.com have forced us fashionistas to pay more attention, willingly or not, to the new Willis on the scene.

This month, with the release of Comedian Queen Anna Faris’ House Bunny, co-star Rumer Willis is taking over magazine covers, red carpets, and the fashion blogosphere. Some of my girlfriends and I have watched the trailer to this new film tens of times and we are dying to see it, but my jury is still out on how much I dig this new celebutant-stardom of the oldest Willis sister. Let’s see some examples, shall we?

So what do we think of all of this hubbub? Do we dig it? I must say that she brings a new style to the scene that is kind of honestly enticing. She mixes a refreshing Rodeo Drive, Lindsay Lohan prep-punk with an unexpected, intelligent glamour. It’s five days after her 20th birthday, and I wouldn’t say she comes across as young and carefree as the High School Musical Alumni or the Gossip Girl gaggle.

As she loses her freshman twenty and twigs out, Rumer’s style becomes much more sophisticated. Her red carpet look is always a classic dress and some black heels. It so far promises not to falter. Her more edgy, casual style appears to be clipped from the pages of an American Apparel spread with sheer v-necks, black leggings, knitted caps, and muted colors.

Fall-ing for Quiksilver's Women's Line

It's no secret that I'm a big fan of the skateboard fashion movement. Always following the girls' department for skate attire in the mall, Roxy was my signature brand in high school - in fact, the word Roxy is still in a few of my screen names. Now that I'm older, I'm more likely to wear skater-inspired pieces with heels than with the Etnies I used to practically sleep in. My style is also grown up in that I'm interested in darker, grittier pieces and sleeker lines, so I was more than thrilled when I heard that Quiksilver - Roxy's parent company - was launching a Women's Line for Fall.

I first heard of the new line through the Work in Progress blog, which features a YouTube video for the clothing that got me feeling completely inspired. The line includes skinny jeans, extreme flares, tanks, sweaters and vests, all designed to have a boyfriend feel and look perfectly thrown together no matter what you pull on.

With its grown-up lines and colors, the new Quiksilver line could easily serve as a one-stop shopping place for women looking to build autumn wardrobes, whether you're into the boardriding scene or not. The sophisticated pieces do come with a slightly more sophisticated price tag, with items being affordable yet still steeper in cost than most Roxy brand pieces.

The new brand also boasts a few eco-friendly pieces. While it would be cooler if the whole line were designed with the environment in mind, it's a start, and a step in the right direction - And with such versatile pieces, you just may end up buying less and helping out the earth and your pocketbook. I like this new Quiksilver progression enough that I just may start plastering Roxy stickers everywhere again.

Olympics: All About Sports. And Fashion

I just read a fab little article about some of the most famous fashion statements made by athletes at the Olympics over the past decades. You know, because fashion is what the Olympics are all about....

I'll be the first to admit that while I'm not wild about sports, fashion is the last thing I expect to see from an athlete. I mean, it's just so not the point, right? But every once in a while you get an athlete whose personal style just isn't stopped by sweat, high-speeds, physical challenge, or potential injury.

In the office, these would be the always-put-together people I hate for their ability to always upstage me with my just-rolled-outta-bed grog and mismatched socks. But on the field? Totally. Different. Story.

From the 1988 Olympics, we have Florence Griffith Joyner. Or rather, we have her nails. After seeing FloJo race with style, collect her gold, and never even break a nail, my sisters and I promptly nagged our mom to take us straight to the store for bottles of the brightest, most neon-riffic colors of Wet & Wild nail polish our 99 cents would buy. FloJo, I thank YOU for not only introducing me to the previously mutually exclusive concepts of Sports and Glamour, but also to nail decals, which I would go on to wear for another 5 years.

Next up is Nancy Kerrigan in 1994, who apparently had none other than the Vera Wang designing her skating costumes. Wang is credited with creating Kerrigan's classy, tailored look, and bringing a sleek design to the normally "flamboyant" world of skating. Really? Despite watching every Kerrigan competition, I missed all that. Too busy locking eyes with that other skater. Apparently like a moth to flame or kneecaps to crowbars, I am drawn to flamboyance.

Finally, here's another one I'm watching for: Ralph Lauren-designed opening and closing ceremony gear for the Summer Olympics in Beijing. Preppy sweaters, "I summer in the Hamptons" polo shirts and nautically-inspired jackets? On athletes? That's a win for an American designer if I ever heard one.

Guess Who’s Back?!

I was strolling through the Project NY trade show at the Jacob Javitz Center when I bumped into Ms. Aly F. AGAIN!

I made a post about her in the beginning of the month after meeting her in Brooklyn. Aly was in a rush so I couldn’t really get much of an interview this time but she answered a good amount of questions in my previous post about her, if you’re interested.

Once again Aly plays with prints and I love it. The weather that day wasn’t too great but as you can see she didn’t let that stop her from standing out. I really like the shape of the dress and the coordination of the colors. She’s wearing very few accessories which is a smart move for such a busy print. Her hair is on point and her shoes are a plus.

IDK…but for some reason, I believe the “F” stands for FASHIONISTA.

Existing Dull Summer Duds Made Hip with the Perfect Vest

Trim an old jean jacket, scan local thrift stores, or splurge on the latest fashions. The vest is back and can help you to make any dull attire into the best summer style.

Layering in the summer is always a tricky thing. When you don’t feel 100% about the way your body looks in a skimpy, spaghetti-strapped number, it’s hard to layer for look and not add any unnecessary heat. If you’re not game for my summer scarf recommendation, than please pay some extra attention to one of my favorite, and always weather appropriate remedies, the vest. Whether homemade, thrift, or store bought, a vest of any style with a little creativity can add a splash of class and character to tiresome attire.

Chambray Vest: Gap.Com: $9.99: Chambray, which may be hard to see in this picture, but is something good to note, is a lightweight fabric with light white and faded threads running through it. It's machine washable and I say gets even better the more worn it becomes. Gap made a wonderful three-button, v-neck, satin lined number that would match with whatever might comes its way. (My friend Cristen sports a navy blue, blocked, vest while table dancing. Got to love her!)

Kimchi & Blue Back Cutout Vest: UrbanOutfitters.com: $68: Although I’ve yet to pay this much, ever, on a vest, I have had my eye on this one for a while now. Its delicate detailing makes me think that the extra cash could absolutely be worth every penny. I think the navy and grey colors will work wonders for bronzed skin giving it a healthy and bright golden glow. Don’t fret. This vest can be carried into the fall and winter, paired with a long sleeved, soft cotton shirt. I say this vest is a little bit country and a little bit rock and roll, for the perfectly constructed sixty-dollar slice of heaven.

The old Levi's or Jordache (Bongo if you're really lucky!) Jean Jacket Cut Up: Now, my friend Lindsey is the one to bring this amazing trend to our group of friends. She took a child-sized, stonewashed jean jacket and ripped the sleeves off. She let the frayed edged hang and look smoking hot. DJPremium's online store brings you this already mapped out Fornarina vest, although I encourage you babes to DIY (do it yourself!). Its color is slimming and very punk rock. Paired with a feminine number you’ll leave all the boys wondering more about your beauty-bending look or go ahead and pair it with your favorite, over washed Cher t-shirt. Here on the West Coast the Texas Tuxedo (a jean top matched with jeans) is back and better than ever. People compliment one another on their ability to match jean with jean and I say more power to them. If you’re not quite ready for such adventure, pair this hot, and practically priceless vest, with khaki shorts, a pinstriped skirt, or use it as a bikini cover-up. When people ask you where you got it from, feel free to brag about the fact that you made it.

So Hot On the Battlefield: Smart and Stylish in the News

While I love all the current posts about hot celeb styles and trends I decided to take a look at some other stylish folks who are in a different kind of lime light. As a journalism major at school I'm constantly noticing some of the style & flare of those who are reporting our news. Move over Dan Rather, we have a whole new breed of journalist coming in!!!

Case in Point: ANDERSON COOPER

After watching a clip he did on 60 minutes I realized Mr. Cooper was sporting a Prada suit while discussing gorillas in the Congo getting slaughtered. Talk about jungle fever! I thought I was alone on this one but after googling him I found tons of fan sites and articles featuring him in different men's magazines. Turns out people are interested in more than just his CNN sweet talk.

Reporter turned into fashionista novelist: Candace Bushnell

As we all know, Candace Bushnell is the one to credit for our love of Sex & the City. Before Sex and the City was a movie, a TV show, or even a book it was a column in the New York Observer. Bushnell ultimately wanted the column to be about her and her friends but I doubt she had any idea it would develop into such success!

While their are many different reporters who show their faces on E! News I chose to highlight just a couple. I'm not a huge fan of Ryan Seacrest (he is just too pretty for me) I still have to admit he shows up pretty stylish to the red carpet events. Ryan has said he's been doing radio since he was in his mere teens. Talk about experience, no wonder he has so many jobs!! Seen below in these photos Ryan is mostly seen in very stylish designer suits...I wish he would do a more casual look sometime. Does anyone else think he just seems TOO put together at times? In this photo of Giuliana Rancic I love how she is wearing different shades of blue which offset her dark Italian features. Giuliana was born in Italy and taught herself English by watching American soap operas! Who knew!?

Style Icon: Kelly Osbourne

Oh, Kelly Osbourne. Love her or hate her, you can't deny she's always at the forefront of fashion and isn't afraid to experiment by mixing hot trends with classic styles.

Personally, I have a love/hate relationship with her. Mostly because I once had short pink and black hair and the comparisons were inevitable. But Osbourne, perhaps best known for going through haircolors and styles like she goes through boys in bands (maybe her crazy romantic life and abrupt style changes are related?), has recently been stepping up her game. While it might be hard for some of us to picture her as a "style icon," girlfriend has been trailblazing all over the place! The flirty camisoles, the flouncy skirts, the delicate embellishments!

And sure: she's had her (very, very, very) bad fashion choices - but who hasn't? Growing up in front of the camera has got to be a headache, especially with the kind of lifestyle she is now known for. Hell, when I was 18, I know I made some bad fashion choices - luckily, I didn't have all of America and Britain scoping my every move and every bad hair day. Oh the pressure!

Speaking of bad hair days, it's hard to keep up with this style chameleon: sleek black bob, short blonde faux-hawk, crazy pink pageboy. But it's so much fun trying to figure out her next move. It's no secret she doesn't care what we think about what she wears. But winning a best-dressed award is sure to be fabulous validation for all her hard work. Hard to believe this fashionista once claimed to hate anything girly!

Maybe her recent weight loss has something to do with her newfound clothing confidence. Maybe not. You never see see her in anything too tight or ill-fitting. The looks that have been working for her are easy to pull off: smooth and streamlined, fun flirty dresses, round-toed pumps, and classic 40's make-up. I'd love to go shopping with her, that's for sure!

I Like Your Style...Men I Swoon Over

A guy with style will always turn my head. I find different attire attractive and fascinating, depending on who the wearer happens to be. This post is all about men I think ooze style and seem to effortlessly own their look. It matters not how kooky or preppy or if you even are truly dressed (have you seen the new Beck’s underwear ads?? Have you? Seriously. Have you?), as some men have style with no help from clothing or accessories. Read on people. Read on.

I’d Love to Bond with Him

My first man of style is the supreme hunk of burnin’ love, the newest James Bond, Daniel Craig. If you saw him in Casino Royale you know he can rock casual clothes (Do you recall the scene when the helicopter lands and he gets out wearing those khakis? Yes, those khakis. You know the ones~) just as well as a tux and you won’t be able to take your eyes off him if he is clothed or unclothed. For the past two years I’d say he is number one in my fantasies. He is quite funny in interviews, and a sense of humor is very attractive to me. Something about him really does it for me. I mean really really really really does it for me. I usually prefer dark haired men, too.

This brings me to the picture of the UPS truck. I’m sure you’re wondering what that has to do with Daniel Craig. Well, my UPS guy, Scott, looks an awful lot like Daniel, and Scott has incredible eyes and is sweet and funny and is Mr. Customer Service, so he is just constantly winning points with me on a weekly basis. I get a lot of packages so we have become friends. I wanted to take his photo so I could put it on this post but he would not let me. He gets a little shy on me sometimes. Scott knows he looks like Daniel. I asked him last year if people said he resembled Bond and he said no, at the time. Then later he mentioned that some chick told him he looked like 007. Then he mentioned he bought the movie. You know the UPS ad campaign that says 'What Can Brown Do for You?' Well I could make a list. As for style I have only ever seen him in BROWN. I know he likes Banana Republic. Bet he looks great in it, too.

Mr. Simpson

Pete Wentz has a cool, punky style but when I see him on the tube or in pics I don’t get the feeling he has been styled by some hired gun. I think he walks around in hoodie heaven most of the time and, hey, what’s wrong with that? But when you dress him up, he looks wonderful. And I gotta say I love guys with eye makeup. This goes way back to when I was single and dated lots of band guys. To this day, a dude with guyliner, that is owning it, turns me on. (I still love musical guys; my husband plays the guitar every single day.) Ashlee is quite the pretty girl and I love her current red hair, but she is never gonna have better hair than her husband. I’m rocking Fall Out’s version of ‘Beat It’ with John Mayer on guitar on my ipod these days. That and ‘4 Minutes’ can get me through most any thing.

Jamie is Turning Up the Heat

With his current show ‘Jamie at Home,’ chef, author and restaurant owner Jamie Oliver is a ‘must record’ every week for me! Often seen wearing stripes with plaids and always sporting funny hats, Jamie has a devil may care style and it just makes me love him all the more. He is so unconscious of his clothes that he looks stylish. Oh, if only I could have him move in, with his wife and precious daughters, and cook for me all the time. Okay, a girl can dream. Always remember: no one can take away your dreams.

GreenDay EveryDay

Oh Billie Joe. How do I love thee? For years I have adored Billie Joe for his ‘put my finger in a light socket’ style black hair, and yes, I’m gonna go there again, his guyliner. The boy has the most intense eyes. And I am an eye girl. I totally get the whole ‘window to the soul’ thing. Anyway, he has been wearing skinny pants and skinny ties forever and it suits him. And he’s been wearing a wedding band since the damn day he got married ~ through all his tours and all his hours in the studio and all his awards shows where he won or lost, he’s had that ring on. And I just love that. Obviously it’s his most important accessory ever. Nothing is more stylish than a man who truly adores his spouse.

If Only I Could Af (Ford) Him

Damn. Tom Ford is simply gorgeous. He probably knows it, but that is okay. Don't stare for too long; you might go blind. Do you see the way the waist of his suit is slightly nipped in? Because he is a designer he can do this type of stuff. So, so wrong (wrong=right). I can’t talk any more about Tom. There aren’t any words. He probably likes whips and chains. Don’t you think he resembles Jonathan Antin of reality tv hair cutting fame??? Tom is super, super sexy. Gray stubble is about the sexiest thing on earth. I don't want to kiss you with it but I enjoy looking at it.

You Can’t Buy Class

Denzel Washington exudes class and that is something all the money in the world can’t buy. In a suit or the casual jeans and coat, he looks masculine and fabulous and like he is a man you would want to be saddled up against. He has a great body for clothes and must have a great stylist or maybe his wife picks out his clothes? However he is getting dressed, it is working for him. Remember: if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

In Touch with His Feminine Side

What can I say about David Beckham’s style that has not already been said? I am not a fan of men in flip flops but we know Beck’s gets pedicures so he can wear flippers (that’s what I call flip flops) all he wants and I won’t complain. Look at his long sweater and scarf…only a freaking major athlete could pull that off and still have everyone, guys and chicks, thinking he’s sexy and masculine and can take care of business on and off the field. And I can’t even begin to talk about his various hairstyles. I am a huge fan of the BUZZ CUT on men and I adored David’s faux hawk, too. I bet no one would get tired of waking up next to that.

I have to try to contain myself, as it is bedtime for me. Wishing all of you sweet style dreams and luscious men to star in them.

Style File: Kim Kardashian Summer Fashion

Kim Kardashian Summer Fashion 2008

Tired of seeing and reading about Kim Kardashian yet? I am, too – kinda – although even I am guilty of gawking at her style choices pretty often. Overrated or not, you gotta admit that Kim Kardashian is one of the trendiest gals in Hollywood right now. Among the “F” words she’s associated with – “faux” being one of them because she’s always wearing those long false eyelashes – I happen to think her wardrobe is “fierce” and “fabulous”. For that reason I am doing this expose on some of Kim Kardashian’s choice summer fashions.

Metallics

I predict that metallics will lie to rest after this summer but that doesn’t stop Miss Kardashian from rocking this metallic gold tube dress striped in black with black peep toe pumps. The small black clutch is a perfect accessory to this tiny slim-fitting dress. Pairing metallic clothes with basic black pieces ensures your look won’t be too clash-y.

Wide Leg Pants

Along with bell bottom flares, high-waist wide-legged pants have been seen all over the place since last fall. Victoria Beckham is also a repeat offender of this trend. I love how Kim pairs these high-waist wide-legged jeans with a grey button-up top to make it chic, yet has rolled-up sleeves and the bottom all tied up to show just the right amount of skin on a fair summer night. Again, the accessories are on point: metallic silver stacked bangles, a silvery grey clutch, and metallic silver gladiator sandals complete Kim’s wide-legged look.

Prints & Patterns

Pucci- and Missoni-style prints seem to emerge season in and season out in some form and this summer it’s all about bright print dresses. Kim Kardashian pairs this Mint print dress with velvety brown peeptoe pumps for a totally fun and refreshingly non-skintight summer ensemble.

Eyelets

It’s somewhat shocking to see Kim in such a… classy, long, snow white eyelet dress with matching handbag and white lace-up platforms. Still, Kim keeps it Kim-style with a revealing bust, although the flipped collar maintains this more tasteful, demure look.
