Stress and Skin: An Ugly Combination

Were you aware that a few years ago results were released from a study involving mice, ultraviolet light and stressful conditions?

The study, conducted at Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center and published in the December 2004 issue of the American Academy of Dermatology, showed that mice exposed to stressful conditions and cancer-causing UV light developed skin cancers in less than half the time it took for non-stressed mice to grow tumors.

Now, while no one is actually comparing you to a mouse, seeing as how UV light and stress are common factors that many of us are exposed to each day, we must take note of these data. Daily stress is a big part of most people's lives. And it does indeed affect our largest organ, our skin.  Sigh.  Heavy sigh.

Any number of nasty nuisances can stress our skin out, from dicey love relationships and monthly hormonal hells to seemingly endless financial struggles and constant work pressures. (Ugh. I need a glass of champagne.) Our job is to fight the inevitable life and skin stressors that will always try to ruin our day. Our bodies insist on exposing whatever we are dealing with, internally and externally, on our faces. It’s nice to know that when life hands us lemons (stress) we have ways to make lemonade (products, common sense and deep breathing).  Armed with knowledge and a commitment to consistency, your skin can fight the good fight against stress ~ and win.

5 No-Brainers to Help Stressed Skin:

  1. Exfoliate skin at least once a week.
  2. Moisturize skin daily.
  3. Drink plenty of water.
  4. Wear sunscreen each and every day of your life.
  5. Limit alcohol and caffeine.
