New Olay Pro-X Line Hits Drugstores in 2009: Is it Worth the Price Point?

Olay Professional Pro-XOlay is no longer just cold cream and body wash. Olay’s new Pro-X line is a line of professional grade anti-aging skincare products. Olay Pro-X will feature six products that address wrinkle repair, skin firming, hyperpigmentation, rosacea, and general skin aging. The products include Age Repair Lotion SPF 30, Wrinkle Smoothing Cream, Hydra Firming Cream, Deep Wrinkle Treatment, Eye Restoration Complex, and Discoloration Fighting Concentrate.

Olay’s professional grade Pro-X line will retail in drugstores in early 2009 for no less than $40 per product.

A starter kit will be available in January 2009 online and in drugstores stores for $62, which will feature smaller sizes of all the products in the new line. My favorite department store serums and moisturizers don’t retail for more than $60. What would coerce me, or any other woman with or without significant skin issues, to invest so much money into Olay’s new highly-priced drugstore skincare line? Especially when L’Oreal’s Skin Genesis line, which retails for $$ cheaper in drugstores, has already proven to be a worthy drugstore buy for advanced skincare?

I’m sure Olay’s new Pro-X line, which was developed by 14 Proctor & Gamble dermatologists and boasts some powerful skincare ingredients, will provide notable results. I’m just not sure it’s worth spending over $40 for drugstore skincare, when you can continue using your trusted department store favorites, or other proven drugstore winners that cost significantly less.

Would you pay this much money for mass-market skincare?

I agree with the brighter complexion, but it is not good for wrinkles. I will not buy again. I will just use the loreal genesis. They hyped this product up, to just make a ton of money.

Hi Carol, thanks for your post...how long did the indentation take to go away? I have a large area on my face that has sun damaged and that entire area is now indented to the point wher my face is slighly disfigured so wanted to know how long before your face plumped back up/ Thanks

Sparkle Diva, What product did you use that you noticed overnight???

Thanks, Suz

Sparkle Diva - it looks like there are two different starter kits with different products. Which one did you buy? That sounds like what I need.
Thanks

you may not have purchased it by the allowed purchase dates or the kit is not included. read the fine prin. the BBB will not get all your money back for something that you have been using, it would end up beinf gree. good luck with that.

I received a $25 rebate coupon good on a purchase of $50 worth of new Pro-X products. I purchased the starter kit and a larger size of the overnight cream. I filled out my rebate forms and included all information requested but was denied my rebate because "my cash register receipt did not meet requirements". Luckily I kept a copy of everything I submitted and resubmitted my request as an appeal and ask for an explanation on what exactly was wrong with the receipt. Several weeks later I received another copy of the same letter I had previously received but no additional information on what they saw was missing. I plan on filing a complaint with the BBB to see if they can get my money back. Beware of this advertisement! Don't buy these items just because you think you can get a partial refund. It is obvious, they are collecting on the their new ridiculously priced items by using the coupon offer. The consumer takes the fall whether the products work or not. Up until now I have been a loyal Oil of Olay consumer but I will not longer be the case.

I recently purchased the Olay ProX kit. It will be a week now. I am in my early 50's , I had a few deep wrinkles on my forehead and one between my brows. They have been reduce substanially since I started using this product. This did not include the deep wrinkle cream, so I can only imagine the effect it would have. The area around my eyes had fines lines and my eyes looked tired. The eye cream has help diminish and reduce the fine lines and around my eyes and they look much smoother.

The price was high but ... I mailed back for $25.00 coupon refund and I purchase another of the same product line which included $10.00 coupon toward next purchase.

I actually saw the difference over night. The wrinkles under my eyes were gone the next morning and when I smile the skin under my eye does not move or wrinkle up. It looks like i've had a shot of botox. They say 4 weeks for the total results I can't wait. I will never choke about the price again.

I'm 48 and have pretty good skin. Not too many wrinkles but I'm vain about my face and not wanting wrinkles so I'm always buying wrinkle cream etc... I have hereditary dark circles under my eyes and had one fairly large age spot on my face near my eye. As much as I hated the price I went to CVS a couple of months ago and bought the $62.00 starter kit. I used the $25.00 rebate, a $5.00 newspaper coupon and CVS bonus bucks or whatever you call them to justify spending that much on it. For all of the money I've spent on every drugstore cream this has been the first time I have actually seen results. I was amazed at the results. The dark circles under my eyes are considerably improved but the weirdest thing was the age spot. After about a week of using the product religiously I looked in the mirror one morning and noticed three quarters of the age spot was gone. Instead there was a white spot where it had been and my skin there was indented somewhat. I could even feel the indentation with my finger. I thought, well... I guess this is better and at least easier to cover up with makeup than the age spot was if this is the end result. It wasn't the end result though. The indentation disappeared as well as the white skin which was much lighter than my skin. Little by little it all went away. For some reason the one quarter of the age spot is still there so I don't know what's up with that but WHAT AN IMPROVEMENT! I showed my sister and being the health nut that she is she said something like, that can't be good.. it's eating away layers of your skin or something but she was amazed at the results and commented that my dark circles, which she also has were much, much improved. After the white spot and indentation disappeared she was really impressed. I experienced absolutely no redness or irritation during this process. The problem is that I don't really know which of the products in the kit actually did the work. I was using the small tube around my eyes and thought if it's suppose to help the under eye circles maybe it will help the age spot too so I was applying it there as well as the day cream and night cream. I just massaged it in really well, waited a few minutes and then applied either the day or night cream depending on, well.. day or night. I suspect it was the small tube that got rid of the age spot. My skin also feels so smooth now. I can't believe the difference. Also the starter kit has lasted me for two months now as I use it very sparingly. The small tube is almost empty but I have another few weeks worth of the night and day cream left. I can't tell you how much money I've spent on anti-wrinkle creams etc... in the last few years with very, very minimal results compared to Olay Pro-X. The Olay regenerist was the 2nd best. I wish I had taken a before and after picture of that age spot because I'm still not believing how it disappeared. I'm getting comments from everyone about my face and being asked what I did and did I have plastic surgery etc... I live in Florida and tan really easily and have spent most of my life in the sun so I felt fortunate before this product that my face didn't reflect much damage but now I'm just thrilled beyond words. I recommend this product to anyone with dark circles and age spots. As for the wrinkles, I was fortunate enough not to have many to begin with so I can't say for sure as to anyone's possible results with them.

Donna: I have extremely sensitive skin and have rosacea. I have been using the Pro X Hydra firming cream at night AND day. I love it and have not had redness or sensitivity. Also the Olay website has a $25 rebate until May 5 for spending $50.

Hi lilly4me, I just purchased the age repair lotion and the eye serum (have not used yet). I also use Retin-A and am wondering how you use the deep wrinkle cream. Do you use the Retin-A and then use the deep wrinkle cream over the Retin-A. Do you wait an hour or two before using the cream? Thanks for all your help.

I purchased the Eye Restoration Complex Pro-X from a magazine ad. i've been using it for a week now and truly tell a differnece in the darkness and puffiness under my eyes which i can never seem to get rid of. Either with sleep or protein, neither of which seem to help. I thought I'd give it try and so far, so good. Yes, it's pricey but it's a lot cheaper than surgery.

I tested this product for Olay about a year ago and I saw a HUGE difference in my skin. I personally think it is worth the cost. I especially saw a reduction in some of the deeper lines between my eyebrows. And, I saw an evening of skin tone.

I'm 45 yrs old & getting lots of wrinkles..I just bought this cream today hoping that it will work..When should I see a difference...Trust me I would pay alot of money to get rid of theses wrinkles.Does it really work?

I tried this when it was on sale at Walgreens. It is OK. I did see a brighter complexion, but did nothing for the deep wrinkles, as promised. I would not invest in this again.

If you live in an area where there are CVS Drugstores, they are giving back $5.00 in Extra Bucks. Also in Sunday's paper, there was a coupon for $5.00 off Pro-X. Hope this helps.

My facial skin is extremely sensitive. I've been using Natural Advantage with no adverse effects. When I saw the coupon for the Olay Pro-X starter kit, I decided to give it another try. I've used Olay products in the past with poor results, but after a week of the Pro-X, my skin is stll blemish free.

Hi, Would you mind sharing where you fit in your retin-A with this line I use Retin-A and am not sure which step to use it before of after??? Thanks

i used oil of olay for 20yrs i don't smoke or drink. i take care of myself now that i'm near sixty i have people thinking i'm near 40 [yes i'm married with kids[my son is thirty five and people think were brother so oil of olay works but taking care of oneself helps

I am 34 and just started using the Pro-X line. I love that the Pro-X Age Repair Lotion has a broad-spectrum SPF of 30, but a lot of other lotions like this have either no SPF or only SPF 15 which isn't enough for my fair skin. I also bought Eye Restoration Complex and it seems to be an eye-lift in a jar, it worked amazingly for me from day 1. The $25 rebate finally convinced me to get both products at my local CVS. I eat very healthily and drink plenty of water and do not have any deep wrinkles yet but I have been told that the time to start with these anti-aging products (the good ones) is now not 15 years from now when the wrinkles have already set in. I have been using the Age Repair Lotion for a week and I have had two people ask me if I have just gotten a facial and my skin feels amazing. To me, it's well worth the money and possibly even more so to PREVENT wrinkles. Plastic surgery is much too dangerous and too much $$$$$ for me.

Just started new Pro X products and I am very impressed with the results. I am 48 and have used olay for 10 years. People are always amazed when I tell my age and tell me I look 30. I owe this great skin to Olay! But about this new product I saw great results in 10 days, well worth the money. These products really do what they say and I hope you will try for yourself. I look at this as saving money because botox and other options are really high....I will pack my lunch to save money but want to take care of my skin as long as possible!

'm 54 years old and had great skin all of my life until about five years ago.
Yes, I am getting older, but mostly my skin issues are due to leaving beautiful Los Angeles to cold Cleveland Ohio. The dry air from either heaters all (long, long, LONG) cold winters drying me out (even my hair and scalp) to having the air conditioner going all summer (mind you, we no longer seem to have Spring and Fall here and we go from -0* to 89* with 99% humidity, a far cry from the great air of Southern California.)
Also, I don't get as many good fresh vegetables and fruits as I did in CA. So, I have aged quite rapidly, like I mentioned. But, since using the regular Olay products I have seemed to kept from looking anywhere CLOSE to my age. I just got married last September and was completely happy with all of my wedding photos.
I have extremely delicate skin and the ONLY products I can use on my skin are the Olay products. I never have the burning, itching and even blistering from Olay as I do from L'oreal, Nuetragena and especially Garnier.. OMG That about burnt my eye lids right off.
I am just now purchasing the new Olay Professional products and yes, spending almost $300 may seem a bit extreme, however I am not the surgery kind of girl. (Yes, even though I AM from LA, I just cannot get myself to be cut on)
I am hoping to have the same great results from this new product as I have from the Regenerist and other Olay products and best of all not having to worry about my face falling off as with the above named products.
I'll let you all know how the new Professional products work, but I certainly trust Olay. And for all of the many items I purchased, $300 does seem a LOT cheaper than ER visits for 2nd degree burns or buying Department Store products that have been proven by several tests to be far inferior to Olay.
Wish me luck! :o)

I heard a lot about Olay Pro-X, I don't think we get in India. I would really like to try once. I'm very happy about Olay products, I have been using since many years.

I hope we get this product soon in India...

Hi Lilly4me,
So sorry to bother you, but can you please tell me in what order you apply your products? Not sure which to apply first.
Thank you!!!

The cost is too high, the packing is over the top. Why do they have to spend so much money on the fancy packaging and promoting. If the product was that good, it would speak for itself. It's so damn expensive because of all the dermatologists and scientists who claim to have devised this fancy product with only a few basic ingredients, they need to get PAID !!!!!!!
Although, coming from using Origins religiously, I would equate the feeling of the firming and deep wrinkle of ProX, to the Origins White tea guardian serum, maybe even better. So I agree it's a great product, but it's too damn expensive.
p.s. Origins Night-A-Mins is a super great product.

This stuff is miraculous!! I bought a couple of the starter packages right around Xmas. I have had people comment on how great my skin looks. I use Olay daily facial cloths to wash with first. I am being religious in using it morning and night as instructed. My neck and lower jaw skin has tightened up beautifully. The skin around my eyes looks fresh.

I had really wanted to try the Pro X product, but the price has deterred me. I can't afford that kind of money. I had hoped it would be less expensive, and more in line with their other products, but alas, no such luck! It's hard enough to pay the price for the regular lines, much less $40 a pop per product item!

Sparkle Diva's picture

Please tell me also, how you use other products when I (at 62) feel the need to use Renova every other nite at least. How then do you use an advanced moisturizer? Thanks, Shirl

I just purchased the pro X kit in canada, it's alot more than 62.00 here. I love it. I generaly don't use drug store products, they don't really work for me, but this product does, so far so good. My skin is dry, My face always feels tight and dry, and this product gives me relief.

Donna's picture

Has anybody with eczema or extremely sensitive skin tried this Pro-X line yet? I often turn red and itchy from most products and was wondering if this would be more of the same. Would love to find something to lessen my new wrinkles without flaring up my skin for days! ;-(

I started using oil of olay when I was 20 and living in florida I used to bake in the sun daily without sunscreen. I have used all their products (love regenerist and difinity) I just purchased the sample kit for $62 (used the rebate) and I can't wait to try it. Why, because after all that sunbathing without sunscreen I will be turning 50 next month and look 10 years younger. If it takes off another 5 years, I will continue to buy it, if not, then I will go back to the regenerist and difinity.

What Retin-A cream do you use? How often do you use it and what does it do? Thanks for your help.

I have a $25. rebate for this new line, Olay Pro X.....now this would be worth to try it! I do like Olay products very, very much. Go to Olay.com, the rebate should be on there.

Sparkle Diva's picture

Would you mind sharing how you use this with Retin A? Do you use it after the retin a, or Retin A at night and this in the morning. I use Retin A and it does dry me out so I'd be interested in trying what you do. Thank you!

Sparkle Diva's picture

I just received an e-mail for a $25 rebate from Oil of Olay for purchasing Pro-X products. A rebate of $25 on a $50 purchase sounds appealing to me, especially after reading positive reviews at several different websites. I will definitely try the new products now.

advice sister Alison's picture

I have just tried some of these products to review them on the Advice Sisters Blog and the Advice Sisters Spring 2009 What Works Beauty, Cosmetics & Fashion review column. In the 10 years I've been reviewing cosmetics, I have tried lots of creams, some effective, some not so much, in all price points.

It is difficult to impossible for me to say with full assurance that these products are better than the existing Olay Regenerist line, or that you really can see results in less than a month. It is definitely possible that, given Olay's resources and track record with skincare, these products will perform as well or better than anything else you are currently using. The most important thing to remember about skincare is that you need to find the products that satisfy the needs of your type of skin, use them correctly, and regularly. The best skincare product in the world will dissapoint you if you pick the wrong one, or don't use it properly or consistently.

lilly4me's picture

Okay, I have never blogged before but I just plunked down the big $$ for the Olay line about 4 weeks ago. I am a committed Retin-A user, use La Roche Posay sunscreen (the Euro kind) religiously, and needed to up the ante a bit (approaching 40 soon). I did the research, bought the spf 30, the eye treatment, and the deep wrinkle. Ladies, it is SO WORTH the money. It has accelerated the Retin-A results to the point where I feel like I've had a $600 chemical peel. Plus, used alone, the Retin-A dried my skin out so badly - the Olay counters that too, moisturizing nicely around the eye area. I have used the much more expensive, highly touted Skin Ceuticals and Physician's Choice lines, but they did NOTHING compared to Olay Pro-X.
I am a product snob and never would have believed I'd be raving about Oil of Olay, but there is something different about this line. If the price comes down, check it out, especially the deep wrinkle treatment and the eye treatment. Both wonderful products. (PS: I have no affiliation to Olay, just a stay at home mom who writes for a living).

PeggySue's picture

All I can say is I am going to the Olay website and get the sample package BEFORE I buy the full size product. The state of the economy has nothing to do with good skin care and the way you feel about yourself when you walk out the door. Thank you Olay for this product

Bpolo's picture

Too pricey considering the economy. Why pay that much for a non-prescrition product? Generic retin-A is just as much.

55 in TX's picture

I love Olay products and have used them for over 20 years now. With the economy the way it is I will have to pass on this new product line, no matter how great it is. It is just too pricey for the average person. What a shame. We all deserve a break right now and I'm sure Olay can do better than this for their loyal customers and new ones too.

Sandy Brooks's picture

Well what I wish they had is a Consumer Report out on all top anti-aging lotions etc. I can't stand being snowed; however if it is worth $50.00, I will buy it!

Jess's picture

Why would anyone pay $40.00 for anything from Olay when Target carries Boots? Protect and Perfect serum beat out all the dept. store brands and it's $20.00...I guess there will always be people who like paying for expensive packaging and tons of advertising.

Sherry B.'s picture

I really like Olay's products, but this is just a little too rich for my blood! Guess I'll stick with their Regenerist line.

tomsalguod's picture

I see drugstore.com has this item on sale plus free shipping for $51.50. Looks like this is good until December 22nd.
Here's the link:
http://www.drugstore.com/user/promo.asp?promoid=77887

I haven't heard any comments how good it is but Olay stuff always seems to work for me.

sjs's picture

Given the economy it's hard to see how this product will sell well to the general public. Most women will not have the money. So, I assume it's the general public they are not courting but women with money who will pay anything for expensive skin care. But those women don't go to drugstores! Good luck to Olay. I'll wait to see if these products really do anything because so far, nothing but Botox , plastic surgery or those fancy tools that dermatologist have helps turn back time.
