Adventures in Self Tanning: Mystic Tan

As a beauty product addict/junkie/tester/writer, I love most anything that I can apply and see actual results, thus my love for self-tanning products. Now, if you are a big self-tanning person, and I know that some of you on Sparkle*Shelf have raised your hand in affirmation of bronzed skin, you know that all self-tanning products are not created equally.

I recently tested the Mystic Tan Perfect Tan Kit and I’d like to share my results with you. I have dark brown hair and a medium to lighter skin tone. I am not a fan of the cold weather and dreary days with no sunshine, so (especially) in the fall and winter I feel better with a bit of a boost from self-tanner.  In 2007 I experimented with spray tanners and did not get the results I was looking for. The product would come flying out of the can and I always thought, "This is getting all over the walls of the shower and not on my BOD.” And we all know that with these sprays it is a fine line between getting it close enough to your skin to get some product on it but far enough away that you aren’t getting weird dark concentrated spots that make you look like you have a rare disease. I have used self-tanning lotions, sometimes mixed with plain body lotion, with great results for quite a while now. I tend to put it on at night before I go to bed and it never looks streaky or freaky when I get up in the morning. I’ve had good luck with Xen Tan and DermaGlow.

As for the Mystic Tan kit, it kit comes with:

- 2.5 oz Mystic Tan Sunless Face and Body Tanning Spray™
- 2.5 oz Mystic Tan Sunless Conditioning Complex Body™
- 2.5 oz Mystic Tan Sunless Enhancing Moisturizer Body™

In the spirit of transparency (yes, you can tell I have been watching too much news over the holidays, where they are constantly using the word ‘transparency’) I must admit that I did not use the Conditioning Complex Body. It is supposed to do something to your pH level to help you tan better. Honestly, ladies, I ain’t got the time! So let’s talk about what I did use! I got tips on how to use this from the product rep so I was armed and ready when it came time to get my tan on. After one application I could not even tell I had applied self tanner. So this was pretty much the same result I’d gotten a few years ago when I tried spray self tanners and I was sporting a frown and lack of a glow after my first date with Mystic Tan. The next day I resprayed. I found this was a bit runny on my chest area ~ perhaps I sprayed too close to my skin but I was trying to actually get the product on my body! I blotted with a tissue ~ problem solved. By that evening I did look tan and the color was very pretty and natural looking. My frown was turned upside down. I used the Enhancing Moisturizer Body for a few days and it seemed to prolong the color but the minute I quit using it I had the unattractive fade out you get when your self tanner sloughs off. Not pretty. And this happens with all of them so it is not a characteristic of Mystic Tan.

So all in all, I was pleased with my Mystic Tan but not so much that it took two applications to get me to my happy place. I also want to let you know that it smelled just like every other self tanner, too, so no advances there. One thing I do like about the sprays is that your hands don’t come in contact with the tanner so you don’t have to worry about ‘tan hands.’ So for some it might be okay that it takes more than one spray to get the proper color if you can forego the possibility of ‘tan hands.’ That’s up to you.

I wish you a glowing and glorious 2009, and let’s choose to defy all this horrible, negative media stuff and adopt a positive attitude about our lives, our world and ourselves. Choose to expect the best, always, and you just might get it. Choose to expect the worst, and that too can easily be a self-fulfilling prophecy.
