So I'm a slave to the glossies, but it's a harmless habit. Mostly. Except for some months. Like September 2008. If you've got a copy of SHAPE magazine for September 2008, flip to page 42: There's the OMG she's gorgeous former beauty queen Susie Castillo standing in a kitchen with what looks like either a cup of antifreeze, or a dedicated collection of snot.
Turns out it is her secret weapon for "starting the day right." Yeah, yeah, we all know we're supposed to eat breakfast, and that said breakfast should be real eggs, not Cadbury Creme Eggs with healthy carbs, not potato-chip carbs. But come on...what kind of day are you anticipating to start it with this?

Susie Castillo's Green Lemonade (aka, Jenny's idea of Swamp Water)
1 head romaine lettuce or celery
5 to 6 stalks kale
1 to 2 apples
1 whole lemon (yes, whole. Not peeled)
Flavor with an inch of ginger if desired
First, I love eating, but I have never in my life sat down to eat "1 to 2 apples" and an entire bunch of celery. But then again, you can't argue with how good Susie looks.

So that's why I'm undecided if this is a Barf or Beauty trick. Is anyone else juicing green in the a.m., or is this really as nasty as I think it is?

Here's an update: This morning I tried a variation on this with: Carrot, Apple, Kale, & Lemon. And it was actually pretty tasty! Drank the whole batch! I think as long as you get the Kale in there it's a healthy powerhouse of a drink.
i drink this stuff from whole foods called Perfect Food. It has "46 phytonutrient-dense superfoods, 13 sprouted ingredients, fermented whole food ingredients, and 10 probiotic strains" DISGUSTING. I've been drinking it for years now and I still have to pinch my nose to make sure the smell and taste don't make me sick. It costs $77 for a bottle (60 servings), so i would just advise to stick to your green beans and spinach.
i juice all the time, but i've not tried anything like this. but i'm up for the challenge - sounds like a great detox drink, not to mention very high in nutrients.
YAY MARIE! So brave. OMG with the kale, tho. Maybe it's not the juice that's making Susie foxy- it's the workout you get from juicing kale.
Ok girls...I just made this and am drinking it as I type. First reaction: it's not bad at all! I wouldn't exactly say it's delicious by any stretch, but it damn sure tastes like health in a glass. I did the celery & ginger and I think the ginger makes it taste better. It's very "earthy" & fresh. One thing though, Kale is freakin' hard to juice! I have an industrial high-grade juicer, and my arms got a serious work-out trying to juice that stuff. Anyone ever juice kale? Have any tips? I think i'm actually going to start drinking this for breakfast. Then i'll look just like Susie, right? ;) Oh and it's SO neon green, it looks unnatural, how ironic. So who's next??
HEY! Does some brave girl care to try this out and report back? I freely admit I'm frightened of The Juice, but if it gets me even in the vicinity of Susie, I'll plug and chug.
I'd love to hear if anyone tries this out!
That looks really bad, but I LOVE celery. Hmm... I might have to try it someday though. I'd like to have her body!
I'm going to barf. When I'm feeling particularly healthy, I do drink a cup of an organic version of V8 every day. But I do it like I'm drinking a shot of tequila--roll the glass against my lips, close my eyes, hold my nose, and throw it back really quickly.
I am bookmarking this to try! As a lover of protein shakes and Superfood smoothies, I am always up for new ways to get my fruits and vegetables without actually eating a salad. I actually think the concoction sounds delicious and you can't argue with results!
I love your witty writing style (*so* true about Cosmo) and this is a great post.
Ok. This looks nasty. And I find it hard to believe anyone could scarf the entire jar witout making a vivid pile o' puke. However..
I had a friend, who drank a green drink every morning, made from parsley, celery, watercress and alfalfa sprouts, whirred up with some pineapple juice. She drank it out of a mug with ice, it wasn't more than an glassful. And it wasn't bad. I'm guessing the chlorphyl is essential for success.
