And if that weren't icky enough, some of those sunscreens top off their non-working goo with chemicals that may actually prove harmful. Nice.
Brands like Coppertone, Banana Boat, and my own favorite, Neutrogena, fared pretty poorly in their tests.
Sunscreen that doesn't work in the sun, huh? The EWG found that 48% of products on the market contain sunblocking ingredients that may be unstable alone or in combination with other lotions of sunblocks.
UVB rays are the rays that turn you red. UVA rays are the noseeum rays that age the daylights out of your skin. And what's worse, the FDA currently has no active plans to make sunscreen manufacturers report on their UVA efficacy.
So what should you use? These five picks earned the highest marks from the EWG:
Keys Soap Solar Rx Therapeutic Sunblock
Trukid Sunny Days Facestick Mineral Sunscreen UVA/UVB Broad Spectrum
California Baby Sunblock Stick No Fragrance
Badger Sunscreen
Marie Veronique Skin Therapy Sun Serum
While picks like Marie Veronique and Keys cost more (ok, LOTS) more than your average sunblock, Badger is as easy to find as heading to your local REI store. And here in Cali, at least, California Baby can be picked up at just about any drugstore.
Excuse me. I have some shopping to do.

The thing that bothers me about the list of sun screens provided is that Ocean Potion is missing. I'd like to know if they think it's effective or not. I've been using it forever and love the smell but does it protect us like we think it does?
THis article completely freaked me out. I'm insane over my sunblock because I fear the wrinkle-rays. And I'm NOT thrilled to find out that I'm potentially addng another layer of junk to my zit-prone skin that isn't even doing anything.
i LOVE Neutrogena. What am i supposed to do now? ughhhh.
What do you meeeeaaan my Neutrogena and Coppertone doesn't work?! I just bought a Coppertone 70+ spf spray that I was quite excited about. :(
I'm so tired of being scared of stepping into the sunlight.
WTF! I'm never going outside again. That's scary stuff.
I am freaked out now because my children use both Coopertone and Banana Boat sunscreen. Well, at least Banana boat was only low-moderately dangerous. :-(
wtf. my sunblock isn't on that list. i'm not sure how i should feel about that - scared, or totally stoked that my sunblock is just so AWESOME they are trying to keep it a secret???
