The Secret Life of Lipstick: How to make your lipstick last longer

If you have several tubes of lipstick laying around, with only a little bit in the bottom that you just can't find a use for, or if you've ever broken your lipstick and wondered what to do with that chunk that is no longer a part of the greater whole, give your lipstick a second chance and turn it into a lip gloss instead.

Take 1 tbs. of grated beeswax, 1 tbs. of petroleum jelly and 1/2 tbs. of lipstick and put it all in a clean soup/fruit/veggie can.

Bring a pot with about 3 inches of water in it to a boil, reduce the heat to low, and, using an oven mit/pot holder/towel/tongs, place the can in the pot.

Stir frequently over low heat until all ingredients have melted and mixed completely.

Pour the mixture (it's gonna be hot, so be careful) into an old lip gloss pot that has been washed and dried, or you can buy little craft containers at craft stores that are designed for beads which work just as well (make sure whatever it is is just as wide as it is deep or you'll likely have the same problem you started with).

Refrigerate until solid, which will be anywhere from an hour to several hours, depending on your fridge (I don't recommend freezing...it can do funky things to the texture if it cools too fast).

A few more helpful lipstick hints…

  • Lipstick brushes are a fantastic way to get ALL the lipstick out of a tube.
  • You can  scrape out the last bits of lipstick from a tube and store it in a makeup palette. Great way to custom blend shades as well.
  •  If you've left a lipstick/chapstick somewhere too hot, and you know it's melted, don't open it. Instead, keep it upright and stick it in the freezer as soon as possible. Granted, it will never be the same lipstick it once was, but it will salvage most of it and keep it from running all over you in its post-melt state.
  •  Have long nails and hate getting lipsticks, glosses and balms in little tubs, pots or tins underneath your nails? Instead of trying to apply product with your finger tip, use the back of your nail to remove product from its container and apply to lips. Then, smooth over your lips with the pad of your finger.
  • Filling in lips with a lip liner in a shade similar to your lip color will help lipstick stay on. The best way I've found to keep my lipstick on is to apply lip liner, apply lipstick, blot, powder lightly with a loose powder, apply second coat of lipstick, and blot. It really does help, especially with dark shades. I've had a LOT of people ask me about this while watching me eat something like a burger, once they notice my lipstick is still on long after the burger is gone.
  • Keeping lips well moisturized will also help your lipstick last longer. Dry lips will soak up whatever they can, which includes lip color. Using a good lip moisture treatment at night, before bed, is a great habit to get into. Besides, chapped lips can make color uneven and splotchy. Eye creams make fabulous deep conditioning treatments for lips (Gigi Organics is my fave). Also, applying a moisturizer to lips about 15-20 minutes before you apply lipstick (if there's any excess, blot it off with a tissue) will help your lipstick go on smoother, more evenly, with better wear.
  • After applying lipstick, remove the excess along the inner parts of the lips by sucking your thumb (well, kinda). Put your thumb in your mouth as if you were going to suck it, then pull out slowly to remove that extra color that will likely end up on teeth.
  •  A dab of a lighter colored gloss in the middle of your bottom lip will help lips look fuller. Clear glosses with micro-fine glitter/sparkle can also help make lips look fuller, by reflecting the light. Lip plumpers are also a wonderful thing, increasing the fullness of lips temporarily by increasing the blood flow. DuWop Lip Venom is awesome and MLS makes a balm called Heartbreaker that works really well for a fraction of the cost.
  • Red lipsticks will make teeth look whiter. Browns and violets can make teeth look more yellow than they actually are. For a universally flattering red, try Shanghai Red by Femme Couture.

Pucker your pout in confidence by making the most of your lipsticks and glosses. Not only can you save money, but time and frustration through cosmetic reincarnation.

Thank you for this very interesting and informative tips. All women really want to have pretty lips. But of course, the perfect white teeth would really create much value to their well-being.

i find that melted lipsticks/chapsticks/etc is still the lipcolor and texture it once was if you hold it directly in front of the cold air blasting out of an AC (cap on!) for a few seconds/minutes instead of putting it in the fridge....
