New Year's Beauty Resolutions Worth Keeping

I'm a huge fan of resolutions, especially since they can be a platform to de-stress your life, something that's very important for a clear complexion. Try out some of the following to keep you the best looking and best-dressed that you've ever been.

If You Buy It, Wear It. Immediately.

As Katie pointed out in her article, you definitely shouldn't buy if you don't love it. But you also shouldn't buy it if it's going to stay in your closet with a tag on it for weeks. For example, I have a thing for shoes, and went on a shoe buying spree last spring. I bought something like 12 pairs in 2 weeks (the Zappos outlet in Vegas in dangerous!). A bit reckless, I know, so I made a deal with myself afterwards: I was not allowed to buy another pair of shoes until I had worn every single pair I had bought at least once.

Throw Out Clothes That Don't Fit!

I share a closet with my boyfriend, so any space I have is precious. I refuse to fill it up with clothes I don't wear - and neither should you. If it's too big, too small, or you haven't worn it in over a year, get rid of it. I know sometimes it's hard, and I'm not asking you to throw out your whole wardrobe. But if you realistically know that you're never going to get it tailored or never going to gain or lose those last 10 pounds, donate it to Goodwill or SparkleSwap it. Or have a Swap Party with your pals. Besides, it's a brand new excuse to shop!

Change It Up

Don't be afraid to try something new with your beauty and fashion routines. Try a new trend if you're adventurous - chunky jewelry or adding some color into your look. If you always wear heels, try flats. If you love dresses, try a pair of jeans. Sometimes you can get stuck in a beauty rut because you're comfortable and you know what looks good on you. But so many new products hit the stores every day that your NEW signature lip color could be out there and you'd never know it.

Be Kind to Your Feet

Our feet take the most abuse when it comes to fashion, being locked in airless flats or tilted on sky-high stilettos for hours at a time. This can leave them prone to bacteria, swollen, in pain, and full of callouses. Give 'em a break - if you're a religious flip-flop wearer (as I am during the school year), keep your foot scrubber close by to keep dirt and callouses at bay. If you love high heels, try adding Dr. Scholl's Massaging Gel Arch Support for Women into your stilletos. You'll be even closer to heaven with the way those feel. And remember, if you're wearing heels, sit down whenever possible to take pressure off your feet.

Stop Biting Your Nails

I was guilty of this up until last year, and I know a ton of you out there are too. It was easy for me to stop once I was able to identify my triggers: I pulled a Britney on my nails only when stuck in traffic or watching a movie - in other words, when I had nothing to keep my hands busy. I combated this during movies by using a stress ball or playing cat's cradle. I also employed Nailtiques Formula 2 for Soft, Bitten, and Peeling Nails to strengthen them, kept my manicure bright and pretty so chips and bite marks would be ridiculously obvious, and used Hoofer's Choice Nail & Cuticle Cream to moisturize my distressed cuticles. It also leaves a nasty taste behind so you won't even want your nails in your mouth.

Shop at a Thrift Store

I personally don't like to shop at thrift stores. I don't have the savvy nor the patience, and I'm not into vintage pieces. But I only figured that out because I went to a few thrift stores. After a couple of rounds in some L.A. hotspots, I came to the conclusion that thrifting isn't for me. But you might love it and find some fab new key pieces for your wardrobe - so check it out.

Get a Spa Treatment

I know we're in a recession and money can be tight, but there's nothing like a relaxing and indulgent spa treatment to fuel your optimism. A professional massage, a deep cleansing facial, or an exfoliating body glow can go a long way in upping your confidence and leaving you ready to face your day.
