Are You A Human...Or Vampire? Makeup Looks For Both

Raise your hand if you saw Twilight this weekend.  And don't bother pretending you didn't, either - if you couldn't tell from the buzz on the blogosphere or the crowds at the theater, the movie set a record for opening day revenue for a female-directed flick (yay!).

Of course, I was there for "research purposes"; in a book filled with pale characters with huge, dark eyes, I was dying (har har!)  to see how the characters would be done up.  On one hand,  you've got the spunky but delicate Bella, with her pale skin and chocolate-brown eyes.  On the other hand, you've got the dangerously beautiful, topaz-eyed vampire clan of the Cullens, whose gorgeous looks makes them outcasts at their school, and whose skin actually glitters in the sun.

THE LOOK: Bella

Thanks to BellaSugar for going straight to the source: Jeanne Van Phue, the movie's head makeup artist, who pictured Bella as a natural beuaty with a neutral look.  Here's what she used:

  • Lips: Look for a brownish plum lipstick with a creamy finish; Benefit Silky-Finish lipstick in Good-to-Go was used on the set.
  • Blush: Bella wears Visiora compact powder in PC 103.
  • Face: Van Phue kept shine at bay by using MAC Blot Powder/Pressed in Light on Bella as well as on Edward, played by the dreamy Robert Pattinson.
  • Eyes: After preparing eyelids with Smashbox Lip and Lid Primer, Van Phue swept on three neutral shades of MAC eye shadow: Blanc Type, Phloof! and Wedge.

     THE LOOK: Alice and Rosalie

Van Phue didn't want the vampires to look, in her words, "ghoulish."  Remember, they pass for humans in Forks.  Van Phue focused on the skin, making it pale, but steering clear of contouring of any kind.   She used SK-II AirTouch makeup. “It goes on flawlessly—no smudges or streaks,” she said. Bonus after filming in rainy, damp locations?  “I accidentally found out it was water resistant.”

Foundation: SK-II Air Touch Foundation in OP-1
Powder: M.A.C. Blot Powder/Pressed in Light
Lips: Benefit Silky Finish Lipstick in Ms. Behavin (a mulberry color)
