Naturally Pretty...Or Chemically Treated?

A blogger on Great Cakes Soapworks recently posted that, as the largest eliminatory organ in the body, skin is permeable to all chemicals.  Of course we all sorta know this, but what made her think of this were patches (think nicotine and birth control) that pump meds into your bloodstream simply by being attached to one's outer parts.

I haven't completely made the switch to natural makeup, but I'm starting to - and reminders like that make me think I need to hustle up the switch.  But it's hard - some ingredients I know to stay away from (you heard me, parabens!), but others, well...I just don't know.

According to Barbara Close, author of “Pure Skin, Organic Beauty,” even natural ingredients can have freaky-sounding names.  Would you be surprised to learn these three ingredients are actually natural?

Superoxide dismutase (SOD): This natural liposome helps phospholipids and vitamins better penetrate the lower levels of skin.

Currently in my makeup bag in the form of: MD Skincare Intense Hydra Mask

Ascorbic palmitate: The fat-soluble (as in, easier to absorb) version of antioxidant vitamin C.

Currently in my makeupbag in the form of: Peter Thomas Roth Mega Rich Intensive Anti-Aging Cellular Eye Creme

Lecithin: Skin-protector derived from soybeans, used as an emulsifier and surfactant.

Currently in my makup bag in the form of: Korres Rice & Olive Oil Compact Powder

Five minutes before reading Barbara's book (a brilliant/enlightening/scary read - especially for those of us who couldn't stop wearing makeup even if it all turns out to be pure poison), I didn't even know what any of these words meant, and I sure couldn't have told you if this meant "natural" or not.

So.....um, what else is in there I don't know about?

Hi everyone.

By accident I came across this site while doing a google search on olive oil research. I noticed this topic and thought if it's not out of line I would chime in since health related topics happen to be one of my interests.

Chemicals do store in your body in fat and your blood from makeup, environment exposure etc. About a year ago CNN did a report with Anderson Cooper on 360. They took his blood and ran tests to see what chemicals he carries in his body. He had all sorts of known toxins including even banned chemicals today ( but not 30 years ago ) that no one has had public exposure to since the 70's. When he was a kid he used to eat local caught fish from the oceans off the New York coast. Those chemicals he carries to this day 30 + years later. Something to think about. The bad part was the other chemicals that showed up in his blood are from Makeup, yes makeup, the very stuff they use everyday on the talent at CNN and all studios. The broke down every chemical known he lives with daily in his blood, and this includes topical makeup.. I have told my girlfriends over the years that they should use much less and get the most natural kind if they still choose to where makeup. As to 60% absorptions, I can't say; It depends on what the molecular size first of all. Nevertheless, be smart and try to get the most natural stuff for your body.

Sigh. Skin DOES NOT absorb 60% of what you put on it. Unless you are aware of some scientific study that shows this. Please site your source. None of the research that I've seen (peer reviewed, real science) demonstrates that this is true. Please enlighten if you can.

Incidentally, ALL products contain ingredients that were tested on animals.

Ok, to answer Jenny: Herbal Natures Or I was just perusing another handcrafted artisan's website today: Veronica's Lavish Lathers. She has some super light colors and sample sizes for $2.

Skin absorbs 60% of what we put on it, so I say be EDUCATED and AWARE of what yer sticking on your face (or at the very least, don't bitch and complain when yer skin looks super haggard and gross). ALL MAKE UP IS MINERAL MAKEUP. Look up the actual names of ingredients and you'll see that I'm right. However, A TON of makeup products contain MINERAL OIL, which is REALLY what is jacking up everyone's skin (surprise surprise: Nars eyeshadows contain Mineral Oil and oh hey, so does that nasty nasty STUDIO FIX everyone loves and complains about so much....)

Basically, if any product was 80-100% natural, we'd have to keep it refrigerated at all times and it would only have a shelf life of about 2 weeks. Most ingredients in makeup, as I said before, are minerals, preservatives, and essential acids/oils. Pretty cool, right?

My biggest issue is products that test on animals or contain ingredients that were tested on animals. Ugh.

Herbal Natures? Where can you pick that up? I like Peter Thomas Roth's mineral powder for it's high SPF, but otherwise, the crummy thing about being so pasty and so ruddy is that NO ONE makes a mineral foundation light enough for me (I'm talking to you Bare Escentuals! Pllleease make ultra white!).

Why be concerned about switching to mineral makeup? I made the switch a little over a year ago and wondered why I hadn't done it sooner. My skin is so much healthier looking since I switched!! Try Herbal Natures for fabulous minerals that won't gouge your pocketbook. Melanie has wonderful customer service & will answer all your questions too.

I'm with you, mrswhite. Screw it! Because I'd rather live for 10 years in makeup than 20 without it, ya know?

Chances are you will die without having any problems with chemicals and stuff, life is long, dont worry about this stuff i say.

Did you ever wonder why you would need to use a patch to get the nicotine or the birth control medicine into your skin? It's because that's the only way things get absorbed into your skin. For the most part, chemicals do not enter your blood stream through your skin. This is why doctors still give shots or make you take pills. If you could simply get a chemical into the blood through skin, they wouldn't need these things!

There is no proof that regular make-up causes any cancer.

There is also no proof that applying Superoxide dismutase to your skin will have any beneficial effect. In your bloodstream (via food) it has an effect. But the molecule is too large to penetrate much into the skin's surface.

Barbara may have written a great book with practical advice however, her explanation of the science isn't based on anything that scientists have said.

*Sigh* Food, make up, the air! Everything is polluting us. Not to be blase about life, but I say fuck it. Live as healthily as possible, but try not to get crazy with it. As my husband says, "We all are going to die even if we do stop global warming [you can fill in stop eating meat, use organic products, or whatever live longer thing here]."
