Denim Trends 2009

Spring is the season where we get back into dressing for style more than necessity, and that starts with the denim portion of your closet.  Whether you're still holding on to your tattered flare-legged jeans (please don't) or just aren't sure which skinnies to buy next, this is the time to stock up on some new legwear, both trendy and classic.

Wide Legs

If your obsession when it comes to jeans is a wide leg, spring is a great time to do it.  With light and dark colored denim both appearing in dramatic wide-legged styles as well as the classic bootcut, these jeans create a great silhouette when done right.  Wear with flats so long as your pants do not drag on the ground, or definitely wear with heels, but do not wear with flip-flops.

Skinnies

It's hard for me to talk about skinny jeans without getting instantly defensive.  I'm always astounded by the number of otherwise-stylish women (my friends included) who still refuse to try on this style.  Not only are skinny-cut jeans super convenient - they go with just about any shoes, they're great for running errands without trailing on the dirty ground - but they can also flatter any body type.  The key is to choose the correct skinny jean for you.  Any size 0 can slip into a pair of skinnies that look painted on, which may deter larger girls from trying, but a looser fit skinny cut (legs just loose enough that you could roll them up a few inches if you wanted) can be equally flattering on a plus-size woman.

Already have skinnies in your closet?  Try a gray pair, like above, for spring, or play with cropped skinnies that hit mid-calf, or roll them up yourself for a look that's slightly punk-inspired.

"Boyfriend jeans"

Katie Holmes in Boyfriend Jeans

I am half certain that Katie Holmes is laughing every time she sees someone in "boyfriend jeans."  These oversized pants weren't bad enough as is; the girl decided to peg them as well.  It's a social experiment gone wrong, especially if the pants have a mom-jeans butt sag.  If you must try out this style, keep it covered up but slim on top.  A belly shirt with these baggy jeans is oh-so-nineties, but anything not structured on top will leave you looking like a slob.  I recommend a long but body-hugging v-neck, oversized earrings, and cute flats or heels.  No sneakers with these pants, I am begging you.  And when you're rolling, or "pegging," these at the bottoms, be a little messy about it - think quick rolling, not careful creasing.

Katie Holmes typically looks terrible in this trend, despite having all but invented it, but Fashionising offers some better photos of alternate celebs in the 2009 boyfriend jeans trend.

No matter what jeans you put on your body, the most important factor is fit.  Tear out the size tag if you need to - buy your denim for the fit, not the size.  It's normal to try on a dozen pairs (or more!) before you find the jeans that fit you perfectly.  There's no excuse for a muffin top or for jeans that completely hide your shape.  Invest in some Spanx if you need to, and if your stomach is a problem area, the best pants for you will button an inch below your belly button, essentially cutting any 'pooch' in half.

If you only buy one pair of jeans this season, pick up a dark wash, which will go with anything and can be more formal than a light pair.  Get extra trendy on it by picking up something with a metallic sheen, or in spring's popular light gray urban-inspired hue.

  1. Jessica Alba looks great in those wide-legs. The proportions are perfect. But Kim Kardashian looks four feet tall. If you're short (like me) I recommend staying away from the super wide-leg styles. Lindsay looks awful in that pic! I've seen her look great in skinnies and (of course) leggings. But the problem in this pic is the top. It seems to be bunching up between her thighs and makes her look like pear-shaped--and I know she isn't. And yes, Spanx with jeans are fantastic.

  2. I agree, Jessica Alba looks great in her wide legs. That's a look you could get away with in a denim friendly office, or on Casual Friday. Though I would button the shirt up a little more if you were wearing it to work. Personally I would avoid Katie Holmes look, and pick up jeans that are a little more flattering.

  3. Jessica Alba is really ahving a very good dressing sense and she is simply atrue fashionic icon , i admire her style of dressing and also that depicts in her attitude.
