How to Dress Like M.I.A. Every Single Day

Get the Galang glamour of the latest dancehall diva, M.I.A, with a little online shopping and start to feel the funk heat beneath your feet.

Fashion and music critiques alike praise this uncensored British babe for her fight to say and dress exactly how she likes.

With two albums dropped and beats that don’t stop, M.I.A.’s (Missing in Acton/Missing in Action) iconic fashion splashes all over the pages of every major magazine and her music blares through ever set of summer afternoon boom box speakers. The hip hop, world music wailer fuses street art, exotic colors, retro wear, and seductive songs to rank her everyone's favorite badass of the summer. She plays dirty with the big boys and lets her revolutionary spirit come through in bold colored international and spirited threads.

  • After just dancing my life away at her concert with a group of hundreds of devout followers, I noticed that her lyrics weren't the only thing people were catching onto.  M.I.A.'s fashion has inspired a whole new scene to be free and to drape themselves in colors and styles from now, then, and all over the world.  Here are some sites to help you score this hit look that's on the tips of everyone's lips.

1.  Jeremy Scott Website: Rock and roll cartoons meet a 50s inspired color scheme to create a sometimes controversial line of avant guard garments inspired by hamburgers, french fries, and grandfather clocks.  The two artists are friends and feed off one another's fashions flavors.

2.  MamaStone Vintage Ebay Store: A California fashionistas' favorite, this Ebay one-stop shop has a collection of amazing eclectic threads in a variety of prices and sizes.  Grab some neon colored sundresses and floral-tops to pair up with some metallics and you are on your way to getting funked-up.

3.  The Original Wig Salon: This solo-artist sexpot is known for going incognito to her own concerts disguised in a short bobbed wig in white.  She then covers half of her face in dynamite sunglasses (see below) and applies the most brilliant red lipstick possible.

4.  Thug Fashion's Stunner Shades section: Get all sorts of killer stunna' shades at this site

5.  Pricier than you expect, but something that will be handy all year round is a full-body jumpsuit/onezy at LiquidVinylClothing.com

6.  American Apparel Online: Explore with uncomplimentary colors in their one-piece leotiards or shiny halter top numbers. I think M.I.A. would especially approve of their Shiny Suspender Swimsuit.  Mix and match any of these gems with AA's shiny high-waisted hot shorts, Satin Charmeuse Roller Shorts, or Micro Poly Short Shorts to be well on your way to capturing the essence of M.I.A.

7. Marc by Marc Jacobs: Just a few months ago our favorite New Yorker chose M.I.A. as his new angel in the centerfold for Marc by Marc JacobsSome people complain that this is her first step towards selling out, but I must say it made my arms tingle a bit.

So as the sun goes down here on another short week in the city, I hope you take these seven steps towards the heavenly look of M.I.A.  Spring is winding down and summer is warming-up so rejoice in the heat and along with the beats wearing worldly, wild and funky, street-inspired rags.

Hell yeah American Apparel... I really need more stuff from them. This is just such a great post in general... I may have to plug this in my blog. :)
