Hair Removal – It's Never Ending!

Isn’t it funny how we want hair on our heads but not most other places on our body?

Several common methods are used for de-fuzzing, including shaving, waxing and depilatories. Let’s explore a little bit about each one and see what we can learn.

Shaving

Shaving is considered best for underarms and legs. It is quick and easy and highly effective for ridding these areas of unwanted hair. Shave at end of your shower for best results. By then your pores are open and your hair has had a chance to soften up a bit so you get a close shave. Use shaving cream or some sort of emollient when shaving. Hair conditioner works in a pinch. It is paramount that you change out razors or cartridges often to get the best results. As leg hairs grow down, you want to shave in an upward motion in that area. With under arms, shave in all directions as it can grow every way under the sun. Be vigilant about moisturizing your legs after shaving as legs have few oil glands and are prone to dryness. No one wants a desert for legs!

Depilatory

A depilatory is a cream or liquid used to remove hair from the skin's surface. It works by reacting with the protein structure of the hair, so the hair dissolves and can be washed or wiped away. Often used on (gasp!) facial hair, these can be messy and you must do a patch test to make sure you are not allergic to any of the chemicals in these products. Waxing is also popular for facial hair, but be warned that some dark skinned women can experience skin discoloration due to inflammation and irritation. Depilatories and waxing are common hair removal choices for the bikini line, too. Don’t wait until days before your beach vacation to try either of these methods – make certain that you don’t have adverse reactions to either long before your trip time arrives.

Laser hair removal

Laser hair removal is popular and has many proponents. It works by sending a beam of laser light, with enough power to disable or destroy the root, to a group of hair follicles, but not enough power to harm the surrounding skin. Some lasers claim to offer permanent hair removal, but this can take many sessions to achieve. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has this to say about laser hair removal: ‘Several manufacturers received FDA permission to claim, "permanent reduction," NOT "permanent removal" for their lasers. This means that although laser treatments with these devices will permanently reduce the total number of body hairs, they will not result in a permanent removal of all hair.’ I’m certainly glad someone had the testicles to admit that.

 Electrolysis

If you are truly looking for permanent hair removal, electrolysis is probably the way to go. Electrolysis involves the removing individual hairs one-at-a-time by directing an electric current into each hair follicle.  It works on a large variety of skin and
hair types too, without causing ingrown hairs or discoloration of the skin. The number of treatments to achieve desired results will vary, as will the length of each treatment. Electrolysis is safe for the following areas: Eyebrows, Chin, Upper & Lower Lip, Jaw line & sides of the face, Breast & Underarms, Abdomen, Bikini line, Legs and Back, according to the American Electrology Association.

Dealing with unwanted hair is a very personal issue and everyone has to decide what is best for them. I’ve had one bikini wax in my life and don’t plan on having another one. I wax my eyebrows often and shave my legs. I have used a name brand depilatory cream on my face with disastrous results. You have to try all these methods and see what you are comfortable with and what works effectively on your unwanted hair. As we all know, some folks are more hairy than others so it’s a good thing we have multiple methods to choose from. It’s easy to get rid of unwanted hair, so if you want to, you can go bare!!

I'm one hairy lady! Except on my head. If I could use all of the hair that sprouts from all the limbs of my body, I could make myself a cute little weave.

I've had laser hair removal done. LOVES IT. The reason it's not pure removal is because our hormones are ALWAYS changing, which means hair can sprout up again in different places (thank you, Mother Nature. I appreciate the fact that I can grow a 'stash faster than my brother. Seriously.) Howevs, the hair will never grow back as thick and/or the same... I'd rather laser once every five years than shave every damn day, naw sayin?
