Rock the Frock: Best Dresses for Summertime

Fall style forecasting has already begun, but we are still not even in the middle of summer. That means the sizzling party circuit is still in full swing – birthdays, BBQs, weddings – all opportunities to play dress up (or playfully dress down).

Babydoll sillhouettes and maxi dresses have had a long run of popularity. As cute as both styles are, I am hoping that the new Fall season will bring more body-conscious designs that embrace the female form rather than hiding it. Don’t get me wrong – love that I don’t have to suck in my gut and there’s room for that cheesecake, but I don’t love looking like I’m wearing a tent…or the fact that even if I suck in my gut, it won’t change how that outfit photographs. And yes, it may require more trips to the gym but let’s not get so lazy that we rely on shapeless jersey 24/7 to hide our health transgressions.

But for now, in the carefree days of summer (and since these styles continue to dominate), frolic once more in flighty and flowy dresses.

I'm with the Band

Banded-hem dresses are trendy and very “now” if you can pull it off. I can’t  and this is a "fashion don't" for me. The model on the right makes it look cool in that awkward pose, but imagine if she were standing straight up!

Left: Eyeshadow, Macy’s, $38. Right: American Apparel, $35.

The Little White Dress

A classic summer look that is both light and chic.

Forever 21, $22.80

Greece Lightning

The one shoulder, braided detailing is so “Rami in Project Runway Season 4.” A pretty and sophisticated style for special occasions.
Necessary Objects, Nordstrom, $48.

Block Party

Cute alternative to t-shirt and jeans for a casual party, movie or BBQ.

Left: Splurge on Mint Jodi Arnold, $301. Right: Silence & Noise Halter Dress, Urban Outfitters, $58.

Purple Power

A strong, grounding fashion color this season. Purples will transition beautifully into the Fall season as well.

Left: Miley Cyrus looks fresh in this true purple shade. Right: Velvet Torch Ruffle Dress, Nordstroms, $48.

I was just looking at that white Forever21 dress the other day. I need something cute and laid back for the 4th. I also love Miley's dress, the color is on point and the cowboy boots r hot. I have a pair and I swear, they've been worn with almost everything in my closet. I love them!

I like the simple white cotton dress shown from Forever 21. I wish I could find that in a plus-size. It's hard to find light weight summer stresses with straps wide enough to wear a bra under.

I loathe banded dresses and blouses. They're not very flattering at all.

I don't like the frocks and babydoll dresses. It's good for girls who are self-concious about their waistlines but I feel like it makes the skinniest girls look preggers. I LOVE those banded dresses and will definitely be wearing some this fall.

I love those banded dresses, and I love anything in purple. One-strap tops/dresses are still out for me.

I don't "do" those banded hem dresses either.. I think they look awkward from behind, or at least on me!
