Plum Perfect ~ Juicy Makeup Shades for Fall

Plum and mauve shades are all the rage for fall 2008 makeup. These tones play well together with the fabrics and textures of fall clothes, and they help to give you a glow in a different way than the bronzers and self-tanners of the spring and summertime. Check out my picks for plum/mauve/violet makeup that will have you looking plum perfect this fall.

The Mauve Collection from Bobbi Brown

Beginning with the limited edition Mauve Face Palette, Bobbi proves she has once again assembled a range of beautiful, highly wearable colors for the modern woman. The eye shadows Navajo, Vintage and Chocolate Mauve are great for use wet or dry; depending on the amount of sass you are looking for. Center stage is a mauve blush, a stunning hue to give you just enough color on your cheeks to mingle nicely as you don that first fall sweater (put down the bronzer, ladies, and usher in the mauve blush). Never to be outdone, the lip portion of the palette boasts Mauve Lip Sheer, a true must-have for me with its plumy wine kiss of color. Vintage Mauve (described as Medium Red Brown) and Dusty Mauve (Medium Icy Brown) round out the lipstick offerings with a bang (I can say that because the 4th of July is right around the corner). For me, the other true gem here is the new Long Wear Gel Liner in Black Mauve Shimmer. You must see this in person and apply it to your eye to get the full effect. Words and pictures in no way do this product justice.

Chanel

Next we have the new Chanel fall colors in the plum category. The Fantastic Nail Colour is not very well represented on the website, but we all know how difficult it can be to recreate colors to translate exactly on a computer monitor. Definitely one of the disadvantages with buying online. But trust me, this plummy shade, with a sultry undercurrent of shimmer, will rock your world, guaranteed. I tried to take a photo of it with the camera on my phone and it was not good enough to share. So I move on to lips. The lipstick, Fantastic Plum, is a sight to behold. In the tube and on your lips this color epitomizes fall and all that fall entails. Its creamy consistency makes it appear somewhat less pigmented on your lips than it does in the tube. If you want a true darker plum lip I’d advise applying a dark wine or plum lip liner prior to slicking on Fantastic Plum. Then get ready for whatever the future brings because believe me, honey, you are gonna be dangerous with those lips!

Clinique

The Clinique shades I’ll be discussing are more violet tones; a softer, subtler way to wear the purple for fall look. New Quick Eyes Cream Shadow in Rock Violet  is a silvery purple with a sexy iridescence that you’ll love day or evening. Long Last Glosswear SPF 15 also comes in Rock Violet. I love that the formula isn’t sticky. My face lit up and my heart started thumping when I saw the Fresh Bloom Allover Colour compact in Plum Poppy. Use this as blush or sweep all over your face as luminescent powder. So pretty, you’ll hate to mess up the gorgeous flower design. But go ahead. You’ll be glad you did when you see it on.

It's got a bit of shimmer, it is long lasting, and it is like mauve with a little sassy kick to it.

I think it is hard to find a makeup ad where the model does not have on a lot of makeup. It is all about the makeup, after all, so they want you to see the colors and especailly with lighter tones, like a mauve, they have to apply several layers for the color to show up. I always laugh at the CoverGirl tv commercial for Tru Blend Foundation starring Drew Barrymore, because she is talking about how the makeup blends into the skin and you can't see it, while she is standing there totally looking like she is wearing a VERY VERY thick mask of foundation that looks too dark for her skin. Speaking of bad makeup, I saw Shear Genius last night and Jaclyn Smiths makeup artist needs to be fired...she had on tons of hideous blush and eye makeup that are totally inappropriate for her! She is a beautiful woman and would look so much better with softer makeup. Someone needs to tell her makeup artist that is possible to be made up for tv without looking like a bad drag queen.

She does look she has a lot of make-up on. Perhaps it is because I'm African American, but mauve just looks kind of bland on my skin. If I really want anything in that color range to make my eyes/lips/cheeks pop, I have to go towards the darker spectrum of deep wine. I do recommend the Cover Girl's Queen Collection lipstick in Plum Plantium. It's got a bit of shimmer, it is long lasting, and it is like mauve with a little sassy kick to it.

Pretty, but that model looks like she has a LOT of makeup on.
