Clear Up That Complexion With Mom's Cheap Tricks and My Drugstore Steals

I share with you some of my Mom’s favorite complexion home remedies, along with some cheap buys that keep my skin as clear as the sky on the fourth of July.

No Nonsense Skin Type

I was a dancer growing up and constantly in and out of stage makeup. My mom always kept Noxema on hand to get the thick rouges and heavy mascara off of my face. I think this made me tough skinnned in more ways than one. When I hit seventh grade, and thus the time to start washing the mountainous blackheads from my face, I fell back into the harsh, yet satisfying hands of the Noxema cream cleanser  (Look at my Ma's amazing skin at age 57!).

When this classic crème wouldn’t deliver, and a nasty little guy or two would still manage to rear their ugly heads (usually just in time for formal dances), Mom would always have the perfect solution: toothpaste.

I understand how this could sound like nothing but a bad idea, but just listen up.
  1. First wash your face clean of any makeup using hot water. Make sure to scrub spots that concealer and blush are more likely to stick to and hide between: the creases of your nose, your chin, your eyebrow bones.
  2. Cover your problem area or blemish with a good, heaping glob of toothpaste.
  3. Make sure that this is the white kind of toothpaste and not a gel.
  4. Let it dry and go to bed.  When you wake up in the morning your blemish will be close to its final moments of life or your problem area will be dried out and unable to surprise you with any attacks.

Other Great Pantry Products

  1. Witch Hazel: This gentle and all natural product is used to relieve irritated or itchy skin.  My mom always recommended using it in place of an astringent because it removes lingering makeup without harshly drying out your skin.
  2. Olive Oil: My roomate uses olive oil after waxing her eyebrows at home to reduce swelling and prevent breakouts.  This "liquid gold" was used by Cleopatra and Nefertiti to benefit their skin and make them two of the most beautiful women of all time.
  3. Tea Tree Oil: This all natural super serum can help to clear up blemishes fast.  Many friends and family members use this to clear up body acne as well as deodorize and disinfect problem areas.

under the eyes to zap puffs and bags. It truly does work...if you're brave enough to buy a tub without turning red.

Great Ideas! A cheap trick for whitening teeth is to use about i/8th teaspoon of BAKING SODA on your toothbrush. don't swallow...rinse with cool water mouthwash to get rid of any aftertaste.

Apply a tiny bit of VASELINE to your eyelashes with a Q-Tip when you aren't wearing any other makeup under the eye (cause it will remove makeup).
Mom has good cheekbones!

Yes, Neutrogena is who I turn to everytime in a skin crisis. They always seem to have products that zap zits instantly or at least prevent breakouts. I think 90% of my skin cleansers and such are Neutrogena.

When I was kid, I used to get some scratches on my scalp from pressing down too hard with the comb to make parts in my hair, and my mom would use the Listerine to clean the wounds. She also used it as an astringent, in a pinch, to dry up zits.
